Union falls to No. 6 Colorado College at Ice Breaker Invitational, 6-1

Colorado Springs, CO (Oct. 7, 2005) Union had a rough start to the season with a 6-1 loss against No. 6 Colorado College at the Ice Breaker Invitational in front of a World Arena crowd of 6,262. Following a scoreless first period the Tigers (1-0) pounced on the Dutchmen (0-1) with five second period goals, including a pair of power play tallies. Colorado College sophomore Derek Patrosso had a hat trick to lead his team to the win.   

Union played Colorado College close in the first period as the two teams traded chances. Dutchmen sophomore Sam Bowles (Davidsonville, MD) had a power play shot turned aside by Tigers goalie Matt Zaba at 9:15. Senior Jonathan Poirier (St. Jerome, QUE) sent a shot just wide in front of Zaba on the man advantage five minutes later. Union goaltender Kris Mayotte (Pittsburgh, PA) was also challenged but stopped a shot from Lee Sweatt late in the period, moving from left to right for the stop in front. The Tigers finished the period with a slight 6-4 advantage in shots.

Union could not keep Colorado College off the scoreboard in the second period though as the Tigers jumped out to a 2-0 lead. Derek Patrosso got things started at 7:14 with a shot that beat Mayotte top shelf on his left side. Scott McCulloch set up Patrosso with a pass right on the tape across the front of the crease. Brett Sterling added the second goal at 10:01 on the power play, stuffing home a rebound shot in front from Brian Salcido.

The Dutchmen continued to battle and cut the lead to one at 11:57 when Josh Coyle (Brooklyn, OH) scored on the power play. Junior Olivier Bouchard (Quebec City, QUE) closed in on Zaba, drawing him over to the right post before sending a feed to Coyle in front, who tucked it home on the opposite side. Colorado College answered back with a power play strike of their own by Chad Rau at 13:13. The Tigers proceeded to add two more before the end of the second. Patrosso scored his second of the game at 16:03 and Scott McCulloch scored with six seconds left to make it 5-1.

Patrosso completed the hat trick at 1:28 of the third period to close out the scoring off an assist from Marty Sertich.

Colorado College finished with a 32-15 advantage in shots. Mayotte made 26 saves in goal for Union. Zaba finished with 10 saves for the win. He was replaced in the third period by Chris Kawano who made four stops.

Colorado College finished 2-for-7 on the power play. Union was 1-for-5.


Union
will face Air Force tomorrow at 5:07 p.m. MT. The Falcons fell to Maine in the first game, 3-1.
