Game Recap: Men's Ice Hockey |

Coyle point streak continues in Union's first ECACHL win of the season

Box Score

Schenectady, N.Y. (Nov. 11, 2005) Sophomore Josh Coyle (Brooklyn, OH) scored two goals and had one assist to extend his point streak to nine games and help Union to a 6-2 win at home against Princeton. After the Tigers clawed their way back from a two-goal deficit the Dutchmen scored four-unanswered goals and fought off two consecutive five-minute major penalties to pick up their first ECACHL win of the season as they improved to 4-4-1 overall and 1-2 in league play.

Both teams came out firing in the first 10-minutes of the game with a total of 12 shots going up on the board. The goaltending was up to task though and gave early indications of a low-scoring affair. Union's penalty killing unit fought off a two-man advantage early in the first period, allowing just three shots that were handled by goalie Kris Mayotte (Pittsburgh, PA). Both penalties came within the first three minutes.

A minute after the second penalty expired Union went on the offensive, testing Princeton goalie B.J. Sklapsky at 5:50. Junior Olivier Bouchard (Quebec City, QUE) and senior Scott Seney (Silver Spring, MD) had back-to-back shots in front and tried to sneak the puck inside the left post. Sklapsky did not leave any room between him and the pipe though and kept the game scoreless.

Things stayed that way until Coyle scored his sixth goal of the season at 12:22 to make it a 1-0 game. He fired a slap shot on goal from the left face-off circle. The puck got caught under Sklapsky's blocker and came out the other side, deflecting up and in as it got stuck between the net and the back of the goal frame.

Jonathan Poirier (St. Jerome, QUE) added one more for Union before the end of the first period, scoring his second goal of the season at 18:11. Poirier took a feed from Seney to the left of Slapsky and rang home a hard wrist shot off the inside of the post for a two-goal advantage.

Princeton responded with two power play goals within a two-minute span to come back and tie things up. The first came from Lee Jubinville at 11:33. Darroll Powe drew the defense away from the front of the goal and passed the puck in front to Jubinville who snuck in from the weak side for a wide open shot on goal. Kevin Westgarth knotted things at 2-2 at 13:02 off a rebound shot in front from Max Cousins.

Freshman Augie DiMarzo (West Haven, CT) broke the tie with what would prove to be the game-winner 2:14 after Westgarth's goal brought Princeton back to life. With Union on the power play, Lane Caffaro (Slave Lake, ALB) sent a blast in on net from the point. Slapsky two straight saves on Caffaro and then on a follow up shot by Seney but gave up a rebound to DiMarzo who was right there to pick up the puck and knock it in.

Torren Delforte (Shortsville, NY) reclaimed the two-goal advantage for the Dutchmen toward the end of the second period. DiMarzo set up the goal this time with a centering pass into Delforte who one-timed it in.

Union was whistled for its two major penalties within the first four minutes of the third period, setting up a two-man advantage for Princeton and a prime opportunity to get back into the game. The Dutchmen penalty killers stood up to the attack though and left the Tigers with nothing to show for it.

After that, momentum shifted in Union's direction and they responded with two more goals to put the game away. Jason Visser (Mississauga, ONT) scored his second of the season at 10:35 before Coyle added his second of the game with a power play strike at 13:22. DiMarzo picked up his third point of the game with the assist on Coyle's goal.

Mayotte picked up his fourth win of the season for Union with 28 saves, including 12 in the first period. On the other end, Sklapsky stopped 24 shots for Princeton in the loss.

Union will look to carry this momentum into tomorrow's game when they host Quinnipiac at 7:00 p.m.
