Game Recap: Men's Ice Hockey |

Defense proves to be best offense in 2-0 win over Quinnipiac

Box Score

Schenectady, N.Y. (Nov. 12, 2005) An all around defensive effort by Union proved to be the best offense in a 2-0 ECACHL win over Quinnipiac at Messa Rink. The Dutchmen got both of their goals from defensemen, with sophomore Michael Beynon (Nepean, ONT) scoring the game-winner on the power play to help the team improve to 5-4-1 overall and 2-2 in the league.

Beynon scored his first goal of the season at 17:28 of the first period, disrupting a defensive battle early on. With just over a minute left on the Dutchmen power play he sent a rebound shot back in that beat goalie Bud Fisher to the top right corner of the net. Fisher was able to fight off a series of Union shots prior to that but could not cover up the puck after a chance by Augie DiMarzo (West Haven, CT) that came back out to Beynon.

Quinnipiac had a chance to respond on its own power play opportunity to start the second period after Lane Caffaro (Slave Lake, ALB) was sent to the penalty box for slashing with four seconds left in the first period. The Bobcats only managed one shot on the power play chance though. Their best chance came at 1:15 off a redirect in front by Jamie Bates that hit off the post.

Union goalie Kris Mayotte (Pittsburgh, PA) gave his team plenty of confidence with another strong showing between the pipes. He stopped back-to-back shots right in front at 6:21 by Joe Dumais and denied Bates again at 10:55 on a breakaway chance during the Bobcats' power play.

Mayotte had a beat on the puck the entire game, due in part to the defense keeping Quinnipiac from stationing themselves in front of the net. At 7:06 of the third period the senior made a glove save on a shot from the point by Dan Henningson that found its way through traffic, but not past Mayotte.

Quinnipiac stayed in the game right to the end, thanks in part to a Union penalty with 1:33 left in the game that put the Bobcats on the power play. They pulled Fisher was well to create a six-on-four advantage but the Dutchmen defense rose to the challenge and put the game away with four seconds left on a short-handed, empty net goal by Caffaro. Senior Scott Seney (Silver Spring, MD) won a face-off deep in the Union zone back to the boards where Caffaro retrieved the puck and shot it off the sideboards, sending it the length of the ice where it rolled in on goal.

Mayotte (5-3) stopped all 28 Quinnipiac shots for his first shutout of the season. Fisher made 28 saves on the other end in the loss.

Union will be on the road next week, opening up a two-game weekend at Colgate on Friday, November 18 at 7:00 p.m.
