Box ScoreIthaca, N.Y. (Nov. 18, 2005) The first period was all Union needed to upend #5/6 Cornell 2-1 for its third straight win and first at Lynah Rink since February 28, 1997. The Dutchmen rallied behind the superb play of goaltender Kris Mayotte (Pittsburgh, PA) who finished with 33 saves and faced nine Cornell power plays. It was Union's third win over a ranked team and the highest ranked team they have beaten.
Cornell capitalized during a 5-on-3 opportunity at 9:57 when Sasha Pokulok scored his first goal of the season to open up scoring. The sophomore fired a one-timer from the right face-off circle that beat Mayotte high. Matt Moulson set up the play with a pass from center to Pokulok.
Brendan Milnamow (Wilton, CT) answered back for Union at 13:29 with his first collegiate point to tie the game. The freshman sent in a wrist shot after settling the puck between the face-off circles. Goaltender David McKee tried to knock it away with his right blocker but instead the puck deflected in the other direction and found the back of the net. Milnamow was set up by Jonathan Poirier (St. Jerome, QUE) who passed the puck up from behind the goal. It was the third straight goal scored by a defenseman for Union.
Before the Big Red and their home crowd had time to recover the Dutchmen struck again 17 seconds later for the 2-1 lead. This time it was A.J. Palkovich (North Bellmore, NY) who beat McKee. Palkovich stole the puck deep in the Cornell zone, skated in front, and backhanded it past the netminder.
Union's penalty killing unit was tested again in the closing minutes of the first period when a double minor penalty was whistled. The Dutchmen had a shorthanded chance with 1:12 remaining in the period. Freshman Lane Caffaro (Slave Lake, ALB) tried to register his second goal in as many games but the puck deflected off his blade and went wide in front.
Cornell was granted another two-man advantage for 52 seconds early in the second period. This time around the Dutchmen staved off both penalties to maintain their lead.
Mayotte continued his strong play throughout the first two periods. He stopped Moulson in each of those periods. At 16:12 of the first period Mayotte stopped a chance in front and then stoned Moulson on a back-door opportunity at 14:06 of the second period.
Cornell applied the pressure in the third period and had a chance to tie the game with a three on two rush with 10 seconds left. Moulson got the puck on the right side with a clear shot but misfired on the attempt. Before that Jake Schwan (Clifton Park, NY) was able to clear the puck from Union's zone with 43 seconds left on an aggressive defensive play to prevent Cornell from getting its offense set.
Union improved to 6-4-1 overall and 3-2 in the ECACHL. They were outshot 13-33 by the Big Red.
The Dutchmen will face #17 Colgate tomorrow at 4:00 p.m. at Starr Rink to try and extend their win streak to four games.
