Game Recap: Men's Ice Hockey |

Union win streak ends at the hands of #17 Colgate in 5-0 loss

Box Score

Hamilton, N.Y. (Nov. 19, 2005) Union's bid for an ECACHL Central New York sweep came up short as the team suffered a 5-0 loss at Colgate, ending a three-game win streak. Starr Rink has not been kind to the Dutchmen, who have now suffered seven straight losses there and have been outscored 32-8 in those contests. They now stand at 6-5-1 overall and 3-3 in league play after the first shutout loss of the season. Sophomore Tyler Burton scored a natural hat trick and added an assist to lead the Raiders to a 7-2-2 overall record and 4-1-1 league mark.

Union made things difficult for itself taking two penalties midway through the first period that eventually led to the first Colgate goal. The Raiders had a five-on-three opportunity for 1:09 and struck just after the first period expired.

Burton scored the power play goal to put his team on the board first. Union goaltender Kris Mayotte (Pittsburgh, PA) tried to poke-check a bouncing puck away from his left but could not connect. Burton did, however, and flipped in a shot over Mayotte at 12:56 for his ninth goal of the season. Sophomore Ben Camper sent the puck in for the assist.

Colgate extended its lead at 17:05 on Burton's second goal of the game. Jon Smyth got the puck at the side boards just inside the Union zone. He passed it up to Burton who skated up to the edge of the face-off circle and fired in a wrist shot.

Union had a chance early in the period. At 3:52 a tip-in chance in front by Jason Visser (Mississauga, ONT) went wide of the goal. Scoring chances were scarce for the Dutchmen through the first two periods as they registered just eight shots on goal, four in each period. They would finish with 17 total shots.

Colgate took advantage and added two more goals in the second period to make it 4-0 after two. Burton completed the natural hat trick with the third goal at 9:15. Alex Greig sent the puck in front of a crowded Union net from the blue line where Burton collected it and snuck in a shot at the right post.

Just under five minutes later Ryan Smyth added his 2nd goal of the season as a Union power play expired. He stuffed in a rebound shot that once again came from the top of the zone, this time from Mike Campaner.

The Raiders added one more power play goal at 17:17 of the third period, coming from Jesse Winchester. It was his eighth of the season. A minute earlier Jake Schwan (Clifton Park, NY) was denied by Colgate goaltender Mark Dekanich on a wrap-around chance.

Mayotte (6-4) made 25 saves in the loss. On the other end Dekanich (6-1-2) finished with 17 saves for the Raiders.

Union returns home to host Wayne State for a pair of non-league games starting with the series opener on Friday, November 25th at 7:00 p.m.
