Game Recap: Men's Ice Hockey |

Union, Wayne State skate to a tie

Box Score

Schenectady, N.Y. (Nov. 25, 2005) Wayne State scored a power play goal with 7:43 remaining in the third period to force an overtime where the visiting Warriors eventually skated to a 2-2 tie with Union at Messa Rink Friday.

Wayne State had the game's first serious scoring opportunity with 1:14 left in the first period when Adam Krug won a face off in the Union zone and Jason Bloomington blistered a slap shot towards Union goaltender Kris Mayotte's (Pittsburgh, PA) right shoulder.  Only a beautiful glove save from the senior preserved the early tie.

With the game scoreless heading into the second period, the Dutchmen struck first on a power play goal by junior Olivier Bouchard (Quebec City, QUE) at 16:42.  Senior Jason Visser (Mississaugua, ONT) and junior Sean Streich (Kimberley, BC) assisted on the play.

Wayne State answered four minutes later, tying the game at 1-1 off of Jon Grabarek's stick.  The right winger skated out from behind the Union net with the puck, used a screen from Dan Iliakis, and slipped a wrist shot to the back of the net at 12:39.

The Warriors nearly took the lead five minutes later when Mike Forgie put a power play shot off the bottom of the left post during a scramble in front of net.  Likewise, the Dutchmen were also unable to take advantage of potential scoring opportunities during the middle period.  With five minutes left in the period, Union's A.J. Palkovich (North Bellmore, NY) picked up a loose puck at the top of the Union zone when Wayne State's Steve Kovalchik slipped at the point.  Palkovich was stoned on a breakaway at the other end of the ice by Warriors' netminder Matt Kelly.  Visser, who trailed on the play, picked up the rebound snapped a quick shot and was likewise turned away by Kelly.

However, Visser made good on his next opportunity.  With just 46 seconds remaining in the period he notched the Dutchmen's second power play goal of the night, giving Union a 2-1 lead heading into the locker room.  Chris Potts (Phillipsburg, NJ) and Augie DiMarzo (West Haven, CT) picked up assists on the goal.

Trailing 2-1 with 7:33 remaining in the game, Wayne State finally solved the Dutchmen penalty kill team when the Warriors' Mike Forgie took a pass from Stavros Paskaris near the left face off of circle and snuck the equalizer underneath Mayotte's pads.

As the third period came to a close, Union held a 28-22 shot advantage, while going 2-for-8 on the power play.  Wayne State went just 1-for-7 on the power play during regulation.

Union appeared to be in a bind in during the final two minutes of overtime when Josh Coyle (Brooklyn, OH) was sent to the box for hooking with 2:34 remaining, but the Warriors bailed out the Dutchmen a minute into the power play when they were whistled for having too many men on the ice.  Union had the overtime's only real scoring threats when Coyle and Bouchard were denied twice in front of net by Kelly in the game's final 10 seconds.  The Warriors goaltender finished with 28 saves, while Mayotte stopped 21 in net for Union.  Neither team was able to capitalize on their power play opportunities during the extra five minutes.

Union now stands at 6-5-2 on the season, while the Warriors are still seeking that elusive first win at 0-7-2.  The two teams will battle again tomorrow in a 7:00 p.m. tilt.
