Box ScorePotsdam, N.Y. (Nov. 5, 2005) Union fought back from a two-goal deficit to keep themselves in the game but could not complete the comeback in a 4-1 loss at Clarkson to wrap up things in the North Country for the Dutchmen. It was the second straight loss for Union who is now 3-4-1 overall and 0-2-0 in the ECACHL while the Golden Knights improved to 5-2-1 overall and 1-0-1 in the league.
Each team had a power play opportunity in the first four minutes of the game. Union went on its power play 18 seconds in when Lane Caffaro (Slave Lake, ALB) was dragged down in front of the Clarkson goal by David Cayer. The Dutchmen managed just one shot on goal during the advantage though.
Clarkson was granted its chance at 3:35 on a high-stick call by Matt Cook (Belle Mead, NJ) and scored 50 seconds later to make it 1-0. Shawn Weller redirected the puck in front past goaltender Kris Mayotte (Pittsburgh, PA) on a shot from the point by Grant Clitsome.
Union had two notable chances midway through the first period but could not connect. Olivier Bouchard (Quebec City, QUE) shot the puck in front at 10:08 but could not get a good stick on it and goaltender Kyle McNulty trapped the puck under his pads. Sam Bowles (Davidsonville, MD) came back 14 seconds later with a chance in front but once again Union could not make a good connection with the puck and McNulty swatted it away.
Clarkson had a 5-on-3 advantage in the closing seconds of the period that carried over into the second where they would convert to make it 2-0 at 1:12. Senior Jeff Genovy scored his fourth goal of the season on the power play with a shot to the inside left post. Genovy took a pass across the slot from Mike Sullivan and snuck it past Mayotte.
Union's netminder made several key stops throughout the rest of the stanza to keep it a two-goal game. At 2:38 he shut the door on Brodie Rutherglen on a breakaway chance that was created off a turnover in the neutral zone. In the final 30 seconds of the period Mayotte came up big again with a pad save on a blast from the right face-off circle.
With Union in danger of heading into the third period down by two, sophomore Josh Coyle (Brooklyn, OH) answered the call with just two seconds remaining in the second. Coyle got the puck behind the Clarkson goal from Caffaro and scored his fifth goal of the season on a wrap-around from the right side that glanced off the inside left post. The goal pushed Coyle's scoring streak to eight games.
Clarkson regained its two-goal lead at 8:49 of the third period on a goal by Chris D'Alvise. He took a pass from Rutherglen on the left side and lifted a shot in front over Mayotte's left shoulder to make it 3-1.
Bouchard sent a wrist shot in on net from the left face-off circle at 16:15 but McNulty snagged it out of midair as the puck headed for the top, far corner.
Union pulled Mayotte with 2:11 remaining and had two good chances in front of the Clarkson goal with the extra attacker but Shea Guthrie gathered the puck at mid-ice and scored an empty net goal at 18:04.
Mayotte (3-3-0) finished with 22 saves in the loss for Union and McNulty stopped 23 shots. Clarkson was 2-for-7 on the power play while Union finished 0-for-9.
Union returns home as they continue league play next week. The Dutchmen face off against Princeton on Friday, November 11 at 7:00 p.m.
