Box ScoreSchenectady, N.Y. (Dec. 3, 2005) Sophomore Jake Schwan (Clifton Park, NY) scored at 8:26 of the third period to break a scoreless tie and help Union to a 2-0 win over RIT at Messa Rink for the two-game series sweep. It was the first-ever win at home over RIT in this renewed rivalry as Union improved to 9-5-2 overall and remains unbeaten on home-ice with a 6-0-2 mark. They outshot the Tigers 36-16.
Union had several chances in the first period. Freshman Augie DiMarzo (West Haven, CT) was denied by RIT goaltender Jocelyn Guimond at 4:55 on a backhand chance in the slot.
Sophomore Josh Coyle (Brooklyn, OH) came back and tested Guimond less than two minutes later off a face-off in RIT's zone. Coyle wound up from the point and fired the puck in low but the Tigers netminder turned the shot aside with his stick. Despite Union's best efforts, including five straight minutes of power play time, they were unable to score in the opening period.
In the second period Union's defense clamped down and held RIT to just one shot on goal while the offense put up 11 shots. One of those came at 12:37 on George Eliopoulos, who replaced Guimond for 2:24 in the second because of an equipment problem. Freshman T.J. Fox (Oswego, NY) tried to take advantage of an untested goaltender with a shot from the slot. Eliopoulos passed that test though, knocking the puck aside with his glove as it sailed toward the inside right post.
Rochester's Darrell Draper had his mind on scoring the game's first goal for the second straight night at 1:33 of the third period. He skated in on goal to create a chance in front. Union goaltender Kris Mayotte (Pittsburgh, PA) had other plans though, making one of his 16 saves to keep things scoreless.
The game stayed that way for seven more minutes until Schwan came away with his first goal of the season. DiMarzo sent a pass from the RIT blue line to Schwan who backhanded the puck over Guimond's right shoulder. It was the second career goal for the sophomore, both of which were game-winners.
Coyle added the insurance goal at 16:26 to pick up his eighth of the season just after serving a penalty. He stormed out of the box and took a lead pass up the left side boards from Scott Seney (Silver Spring, MD) before breaking in on net and beating Guimond to the near side.
Mayotte improved to 9-4-1 with the win for his third shutout of the season and eighth of his career. It was the first time the Tigers have been held scoreless since March 12, 1994. Mayotte now has a home shutout streak of 132 minutes and 43 seconds.
Guimond made 33 saves in the loss as RIT falls to 4-10-1 on the season.
Union will be on the road for its next four games starting with a two-game series at Ohio State beginning on Saturday, December 10 at 7:05 p.m. in the first-ever meeting between these two teams.
