Union Ambushed by Harvard, 8-1

Box Score

Schenectady, NY (Feb. 1, 2005) Harvard scored on three of its first four shots of the game en route to an 8-1 win over Union Tuesday night at Messa Rink. It was the Crimson who snapped Union's six-game win streak to start league play. Starting goaltender Justin Mrazek (Regina, SASK) made just one save on four shots in 5:04 for the Dutchmen before being replaced by Kris Mayotte (Pittsburgh, PA). Union has now lost seven straight to fall to 10-17-1 overall and 7-10 in the ECACHL.

In the first period Harvard's Rob Flynn scored two of his team's three goals, which were all scored in a span of 1:42. The other came on the Crimson's only power play attempt of the period on a shot by Tom Walsh. Flynn opened up scoring at 3:22 with a shot from the top of the right face-off circle after getting a pass from Tyler Magura down low. The shot beat Mrazek over his left shoulder. Just over a minute later Walsh connected, beating Mrazek to the same spot. Flynn's second goal wrapped things up in the first with a one-timer from the side at 5:04. Mayotte replaced Mrazek in goal immediately following the third tally and finished with 26 saves.

Harvard added three more goals in the second period, which saw its share of penalties as frustration started to mount for Union. Following Ryan Maki's goal at 16:07 to make it 6-0 a total of 12 penalties were assessed between the two teams before the period ended.

Maki scored his second goal of the game at 7:10 of the third period to make it an 8-0 game. Union was finally able to respond with an unassisted tally from Scott Brady (Sutton, MA) 15 seconds later.

Harvard outshot Union 35-25 in the Dutchmen's worst loss of the season. Union has been outscored 20-3 in its last three games.

Crimson goaltender Dov Grumet-Morris made 17 saves to pick up the win.

Union returns to action on Friday night in a 7:00 p.m. home matchup against Holy Cross in the second meeting of the season between the two programs.
