Union Blanked by Brown, 3-0

Box Score

Schenectady, NY (Feb. 11, 2005) Union was shutout by Brown for the second time this season in a 3-0 loss Friday evening at Messa Rink. It was the sixth time the Dutchmen (11-18-1, 7-11) have been held scoreless which ties the team record for shutout games in a season. They had a slow start, getting outshot 11-2 in the first period. The Bears finished with a 31-24 advantage.

Union's first shot came in the first two minutes of the first period from Josh Coyle (Brooklyn, OH). Their second did not come until the final two minutes from A.J. Palkovich (North Bellmore, NY). In between that time Brown was able to capitalize on a goal by Brian McNary who snuck his shot in front under Union goaltender Kris Mayotte (Pittsburgh, PA). McNary's goal was assisted by David Robertson.

The game was tightly called from the opening period with four interference calls alone being whistled in the first. Brown recorded five shots during its four power play opportunities while Union came up empty on its two attempts.

Union picked up play in the second period, recording 14 shots. Coyle opened up with the Dutchmen's first good scoring chance at 5:40 when he tried to jam the puck past Brown goalie Adam D'Alba in front of the goal. It turned out to be the first of many times D'Alba would once again frustrate Union's offense as he did in the first meeting.

The Dutchmen came up empty 3:45 later when D'Alba made a save on Torren Delforte's (Shortsville, NY) shot. Matt Vagvolgyi (Milford, CT) saw his rebound opportunity go wide with a wide open net on the left side.

Union continued its momentum into the third period and had a five on three chance at 7:10 to come up with the equalizer. D'Alba took the wind out of their sails though with two spectacular stops to preserve the lead. During the power play Scott Seney (Silver Spring, MD) fired a low shot that got the Bears netminder down on the ice and forced a rebound shot. Joel Beal (Brantford, ONT) skated in on the puck and sent a high shot destined for the top shelf. D'Alba, still down on the ice, reached his left hand up at the last moment and swatted the puck aside to come up with the save.

D'Alba came up big again at 10:10 of the third. A shot by Sam Bowles (Davidsonville, MD) went through the goalies legs, but the puck caught enough of D'Alba's pads to be redirected across the crease and out of harm's way.

After that Brown tacked on two more goals, including a power play tally by Mike Meech at 17:34 to wrap up the scoring. Before that Jeff Prough converted on a two on one chance at 12:45, taking a feed on the right from Brian Ihnacak.

D'Alba made 24 saves to give Brown its sixth win in eight games and pick up his third shutout of the season, two of which have come against Union. Mayotte made 28 saves as he remains winless for his career against the Bears at 0-3-1.

Union has now dropped eight straight games in league play. The road does not get any easier as they head north to face nationally ranked Colgate and Cornell next weekend in the Dutchmen's final road trip of the season. They face Colgate on Friday, February 18th at 7:00 p.m. before facing Cornell the following night in another 7:00 p.m. matchup.
