Union drops ninth straight league contest at No. 12 Colgate, 3-1

Box Score

Hamilton, NY (Feb. 18, 2005) Union (11-19-1, 7-12) trailed by just a goal heading into the third period thanks to the skilled glovework of Kris Mayotte (Pittsburgh, PA) who kept Colgate off the scoreboard in the second period with 18 saves. The Dutchmen could not find the equalizer though and were handed a 3-1 loss for their ninth-straight ECACHL setback Friday evening at Starr Rink. Mayotte finished with 37 saves as the Raiders peppered the net with a 32-8 shot advantage through the first two periods.

Colgate struck first at 8:25 of the first period with a goal from Tyler Burton. The freshman was knocked to his knees in the Union zone between the face off circles as he skated through in transition. He managed to get the puck off a feed from Kyle Wilson and sneak his shot underneath Mayotte's pads.  The goal developed off a Dutchmen scoring chance after Joel Beal's (Brantford, ONT) shot at the other end of the ice was rebounded to Colgate's Tony Masotto who pushed the play up the other way.

Dustin Gillanders made it a 2-0 game at 15:55 off an assist from Burton. Gillanders found himself on a breakaway opportunity after a lead pass from his teammate and capitalized with a shot that went underneath Mayotte's arm.

Jordan Webb (Nepean, ONT) cut the deficit in half just before the end of the first period making good on a Colgate turnover in its own zone.  Webb's backhand shot in front slid under goaltender Steve Silverthorn after taking a pass from Olivier Bouchard (Quebec City, QUE) behind the net. Webb paid the price as he was leveled with a hit after scoring his 16th goal of the season but the captain led by example and stayed in the game.

After scoring what appeared to be the game-tying goal at 8:00 of the second period Jason Visser's (Mississauga, ONT) celebration turned into frustration when the goal was eventually called off because of an apparent high stick.

Mayotte's glove kept his team in the game though, making several highlight reel saves throughout the second period. One of those came at 14:55 when he stopped Liam Huculak on a breakaway opportunity.  Less than two minutes later he robbed Wilson of a sure goal getting low to the ice as he came across the crease and snagging the puck out of the air as it headed for the top shelf.

Union outshot the Raiders for the first time in the third period with a 10-8 edge. One of those scoring chances came from Joel Beal (Brantford, ONT) who had a partial break away but could not solve Silverthorn who finished with 17 saves.

Wilson eventually got the better of Mayotte with the game-clinching goal at 16:03 on the power play. His shot from the top of the right face off circle fluttered up and over the netminder's shoulder.

Union's power play woes continued as they finished 0-for-3 on the night. They are now just 1-of-36 with the man advantage in the last six games.

The Dutchmen now face No. 4 Cornell tomorrow night at Lynah Rink in a 7:00 p.m. showdown.
