Box Score
Schenectady, N.Y. –Union (11-9-4, 4-4-2) suffered its first home loss of the season in a 3-0 ECACHL setback against #15 St. Lawrence, ending an 11-game unbeaten streak. It was the first win for the Saints at Messa Rink since Feb. 9, 2002. The Dutchmen fell behind early and were unable to recover against the top offensive team in the league. Goaltender
Kris Mayotte (Pittsburgh, PA) produced a 31-save effort, making it the sixth game this season he has recorded 30 or more saves.
Just as Union jumped out to an early lead the night before against Clarkson, St. Lawrence reversed the roles with the first goal at 1:24 of the first period. Kevin DeVergilio picked up his 10th goal of the season, tucking in a rebound shot on the left side. The initial shot came from Kyle Rank. Mayotte denied that attempt but could not get over to defend DeVergilio's shot. The goal came on just the Saints second shot of the game.
Union's
Olivier Bouchard (Quebec City, QUE) provided pressure on the other end midway through the first period. He fired a shot from the left side on Justin Pesony but the sophomore netminder was stationed at the post for the save.
Mayotte kept it a one-goal game at 3:18 of the second period, stopping St. Lawrence on a two-on-one break. T.J. Trevelyan passed the puck across the slot to Drew Bagnall but Mayotte read the play and slid over to cover the shot.
Union picked up play in the third period to apply some pressure in the Saints zone. Defenseman
Lane Caffaro (Slave Lake, ALB) fired a shot that sailed wide after being partially blocked at 2:57. Bouchard pressured Pesony with consecutive shots in front and
T.J. Fox (Oswego, NY) followed through on the same play with a rebound chance at 16:22.
St. Lawrence showed why they have the second-best penalty killing unit in the league at 5:10 of the third period. Union had a five-on-three advantage for 1:18 but did not record a shot on goal. The best chance came from Fox when his shot from the right face-off circle glanced off the back post.
The Saints made it 2-0 at 15:04 when Zach Miskovic connected on his first goal of the season. The puck was cycled around to Miskovic during a three-on-two rush, who knocked it in to the left of Mayotte.
Mike Madill added an empty net goal with one second left in the game.
