BRIDGEPORT, CT -- Union sophomore Suzy Pocock (Sterling Heights, MI) scored a career-high five points on pair of shorthanded goals with an assist in the first period and two more scores in the third to lead the Union College women's hockey team to an 8-2 win over Sacred Heart Friday night in Union's highest-scoring game in its Division I history at the Wonderland of Ice in Bridgeport.
Pocock and the Dutchwomen (3-4) controlled the flow of action from the opening puck drop and blasted 47 shots on the Pioneer goalkeepers. The sophomore forward got the scoring started at the 3:30 mark of the first period on a great individual effort. With SHU on the power play, an errant pass found Pocock's stick in between the two Sacred Heart defenders and she was off on a breakaway the other way, beating senior Stephanie Boulay.
The Pioneers (0-5) got another power play attempt almost halfway through the period but it was Union that once again capitalized a man down. Pocock buried a pass from freshman defender Emily Brown (Duluth, MN) to put her team up 2-0. The Dutchwomen lead grew to 4-0 on a pair of even strength goals from senior Elise Nichols (Pittsfield, MA), the first on a pretty one-two pass from Pocock and senior Molly Garrett (Ridgely, MD).
SHU got on the board just before the first intermission as Arnone scored unassisted on the power play with just 28 seconds left in the period. Union made it 5-1 at 6:25 in the second period on a power play goal from Gabi Wintner (Calgary, ALB) with Meagan Beck (Nizkayuna, NY) and Kelly Lannan (Winchester, MA) assisting on the play. SHU cut it to 5-2 to end the second as Arnone buried a rebound off the stick of junior defenseman Devon Gaslin.
That would be as close as Sacred Heart would get as Union put the game completely away in the third, out shooting SHU 17-4 with Pocock adding two mores scores and Meghan O'Connor (Portsmouth, RI) closing out the scoring at 15:41 to produce the final 8-2 score.
Boulay took the loss in goal, making six saves before giving way to freshman Kristen Olychuck faced 38 shots and made 33 saves, 18 coming in the second period. Danielle Kimble (Reston, VA) made 20 saves in earning the win for the Dutchwomen.
The Pioneers and Dutchwomen will face off again tomorrow afternoon at the Wonderland of Ice. The puck will drop for a 2:00 pm start.
