SCHENECTADY, NY – Senior
Jonathan Poirier (St. Jerome, QUE) posted two points, including the game-winning goal, to lead Union past Brown 2-1 in ECACHL action at Messa Rink. Poirier struck at 4:44 of the third period to break a tie game with his second goal in three games and fifth of the season. The Dutchmen pushed their unbeaten streak to four games and improved to 14-11-6 overall and 7-6-4 in the ECACHL. They remain in sixth place in the league standings.
Union sophomore
Torren Delforte (Shortsville, NY) went to work right away on Brown goaltender Mark Sibbald with two straight shots in the first 33 seconds of the game. He came back less than three minutes later with two more shots in front that Sibbald turned away.
The Dutchmen finally got to Sibbald as
Augie DiMarzo (West Haven, CT) scored his fifth goal of the season at 3:40 of the first period. Union's
Scott Seney (Silver Spring, MD) won the face-off in the Brown zone and touched it over to Poirier who sent it up to
Bryan Campbell (Hannon, ONT) at the point. DiMarzo took the pass from Campbell behind the Brown goal and shot the puck off the back of Sibbald's left leg for the goal.
Brown came right back and picked up its goaltender with the equalizer at 4:49. Jeff Prough skated in the Union zone and won a loose puck between the face-off circles. The puck got away from him for a moment as it slid toward Union goaltender
Kris Mayotte (Pittsburgh, PA). Prough recovered though in time to sneak a one-handed, poke check through the senior netminder's pads.
Union went on the power play midway through the period and produced four quality shots but could not get any past Sibbald. The score remained deadlocked at one heading into the first intermission despite the Dutchmen holding an 18-7 shot advantage.
In the second period it was Brown who came out firing, outshooting Union 13-7 but the score remained unchanged heading into the third. The Bears had two of their best scoring chances at the beginning and the end of the period. Sean Dersch was able to free himself in front of the Union goal at 4:42 and sent a shot toward the right post, but Mayotte made a kick save to deny the opportunity. Jarrett Robertson came up empty at 16:04 when Mayotte made a blocker save on his blast from the slot.
Poirier broke the tie with the game-winner early in the third period, scoring with 15:16 remaining. He skated over to the right post from the face-off circle after taking a pass Delforte. Poirier tried to pass the puck to
Olivier Bouchard (Quebec City, QUE) in the slot but his pass was returned after deflecting off a Brown defender. Instead he snuck the puck inside the post amidst the confusion.
Mayotte (14-10-5) made 27 saves in the win while Sibbald (0-1-1) stopped 33 shots.
Union outshot Brown 35-28 for the game. Nine of Union's shots came on the power play where they came up empty on eight chances. Brown had 10 shots on six tries but was also unable to convert.
