SCHENECTADY, NY -- Union College junior pitcher/outfielder Eric Giovannone (New Hartford, NY/New Hartford) tossed a four hit shutout in the opener and had three hits and an RBI in the nightcap to lead the Dutchmen to a Liberty League baseball sweep over Vassar Friday. Union won 4-0 and 7-5 at Buck Ewing Field.
The Dutchmen improved to 6-14 overall and 5-9 in the Liberty League, while the Brewers fell to 5-18, and 3-7 in the league.
Giovannone walked two and struck out seven for his second win of the season, as his ERA fell to 2.91 after the opening game victory. John Mandel (Fort Lauderdale, FL/Chaminade-Madonna) had two of Vassar's hits. Matt Smith (Latham, NY/LaSalle) had two hits, a stolen base and an RBI for the Dutchmen. Union scored one in the first on an RBI single by Kyle Murphy (Plymouth, MA/Phillips Academy), and added two in the second on RBIs by Matt Wentworth (North Andover, MA/North Andover) and Smith. The Dutchmen scored their fourth run when Ben Brown (Brookline, NH/Bishop Guertin) came home when Vassar attempted unsuccessfully to throw out Wentworth, who stole second.
Adam Gallari (Levittown, NY/Chaminade) took the loss for the Brewers, allowing six hits and one earned run while walking one and striking out three.
In the nightcap, Vassar jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the third inning. Mike Murn (Huntington, NY/Haborfield) had an RBI single to drive in Will Sugerman (San Francisco, CA/Lowell) in the second inning. Vassar opened the third with three consecutive singles by Mandel, Ivan Cedillo (El Paso, TX/Bel Air) and Gallari. Madel scored on a failed pick off attempt of Cedillo at second, and Cedillo came home on Gallari's RBI single to center. Vassar's fourth run came later in the inning on a two-out RBI single by Marc Ramos.
Union scored an unearned run in the third on a sacrifice fly by Murphy., and pulled to within 4-3 in the fourth on consecutive RBI singles by Zach Tillo (Lancaster, MA/Exeter) and Smith. Vassar made it 5-3 on an RBI fielder's choice by Paul Noonan (Middlebury, CT/Pomperaug) in the fifth, but in the bottom of the stanza, Jeff Viamari (Longmeadow, MA/Tabor Academy) posted an RBI single to pull the Dutchmen to within one at 5-4.
Union took the lead in the seventh on a sacrifice fly by Curtis Strang (Shaker Heights, OH/Shaker Heights) and a two-out RBI single by Scott Carroll (Scituate, MA/Scituate). Giovannone added insurance with an RBI single in the eighth.
Josh McKelligan (Canton, MA/Salisbury) got his second win of the season, tossing seven innings and allowing nine hits, two earned runs and striking out three. Mike Donovan (Trumbull, CT/Trumbull) picked up Union's first save of the season, with a 1-2-3 ninth inning.
Giovannone and Tillo had three hits each in the second game, and Carroll, Murphy and Smith had two hits each. Vassar starter Robert Muller (Melville, NY/St. Anthony's) allowed six hits and two earned runs in four innings, while Alex Tansky (Bedford, NY/Fox Lane) took the loss. He gave up three earned runs and seven hits in three innings.
Gallari had four hits and an RBI in the nightcap for the Brewers.
Union will play another Liberty League twinbill against the Brewers tomorrow at Vassar at 1 p.m.
