SCHENECTADY, NY -- The Union men's swimming & diving team, in the final home meet of the season, defeated Ithaca, 123-113 in front of a large crowd at the Alumni Gym Pool Saturday. Union coach Scott Felix called the victory "one of the best dual meet performances of a team I have coached, ever." Union had many strong performances in closing out the home season.
Dutchmen freshman Steve Schapp (Torrington, CT/Torrington), this week's Liberty League Rookie of the week, won three events and sophomore Kevin Kewin (Brockport, NY/Brockport) also was a victor in three events to highlight the Union cause.
Schapp took the 200 free at 1:48.92, and later touched at 2:02.32 to win the 200 fly. Schapp capped off a phenominal effort with the win in the 500 free at 4:55.69, nearly six seconds better then the second place competitor. Schapp was responsible for 27 points with the victories.
Kewin opened up his day with a win in the 200 IM at 2:05.12, and his time of 49.99 won the 100 free. He touched at 2:05.56 to take first place in the 200 back, to also bring 27 points to the team score.
Shane Hubbell (Plattsburgh, NY/Plattsburgh) won the 1000 free with a time of 10:18.95, nearly 11 seconds better then the second place finisher. Steve Cohen (Chappaqua, NY/Horace Greeley) was first in the three meter diving competition, scoring at 245.40.
Union's men's team will compete at the UNYSCSA Championships (men's state meet) at Nottingham High School, February 22-24.
