SCHENECTADY, NY – The University of Rochester baseball team took a Liberty League doubleheader sweep Union College Saturday afternoon at Buck Ewing Field. The Yellowjackets (10-5, 5-1 Liberty League) shut out Union, 7-0, in the first game, and took the nightcap, 9-2.

 

Devin Shane (Bedford, NH/ Manchester West) led the Yellowjackets, hitting 4-for-8 with three RBI and two runs scored. Ryan Bowes (Hamilton, NJ/ The Peddie School) paced the Dutchmen, going 3-for-7 with an RBI.

 

Rochester picked up the winning run in the top of the first inning of game one on a Jay Jay Vanderstyne (Victor, NY/ Victor) RBI single to left field. The Yellowjackets added another score in the second when Frank Infurna (Rochester, NY/ Webster-Schroeder) crossed the plate on a passed ball.  

Rochester registered two runs in the fourth and fifth, collecting one in the fourth on a Dave Kloc (Pittsford, NY/ Pittsford-Mendon) single to center, and the other on an Infurna sac fly to center in the fifth.

 

Ed Kahovec hit his first home run of the season in the sixth, plating Andy Cannon (LaGrange, IL/ Lyons Twp) before senior John Moore (Wesport, MA/ Moses Brown) relieved Union starter Josh McKelligan (Canton, MA/ Salisbury School) at the top of the seventh.

 

Infurna collected another RBI with a groundout in the seventh as Blair Veenema (Penfield, NY/ Fairport) hurled his second complete game victory of the season. Veenema (3-0) held the Dutchmen to just three hits, while striking out two.

 

McKelligan (0-3) gave up six runs (four earned) on eight hits in the first six innings. Moore allowed one run on one hit in the seventh.

 

Rochester jumped out to a 3-0 lead to open the second game on four hits and a pair of errors. Vanderstyne singled to center, advanced on a short Infurna single and scored on a Shane double to left. The pair then crossed the plate on a Dan Brien (Liverpool, NY/ Liverpool) single to left.

 

The Yellowjackets added another run in the top of the third before Union rallied in the bottom of the inning for its first run of the day. Pat Wilson (Cos Cob, CT/ Greenwich) reached on an error and advanced to second on the play. Wilson landed on third on a Zach Tillo (Lancaster, MA/ Exeter) single up the middle, and scored on a wild pitch to cut Rochester's lead to 4-1.

 

Rochester picked up three more runs in the top of the fourth, collecting three hits off rookie reliever David Arouca (Wilmette, IL/ Blair Academy), who replaced starter Mike Donovan (Trumbull, CT/ Trumbull) to start the frame.

 

Nathan Stein (Rochester, NY/ Greece Odyssey) plated another run for the Yellowjackets in the top of the fifth to giving the visitors a 7-1 lead.

 

The Dutchmen picked up another run on a Bowes single to right center in the bottom of the eights, but the Yellowjackets added their ninth score in the top of the final inning, crossing the plate on a passed pall.

 

Donovan (0-2) allowed four runs on eight hits in the first three innings. Arouca gave up three runs on three hits in the fourth inning before being relieved by Brian McLaughlin (Norwood, NJ/ Old Tappan), who struck out one and gave up two runs on four hits in the final five innings.

 

Pete McEneaney (New York, NY/ Collegiate) earned his second win of the season, allowing one run on eight hits in seven innings. Chris Olsen (Glenmont, NY/ Bethlehem Central) allowed one run on one hit in the eighth, and John Fishback (Penfield, NY/ Webster-Schroeder) gave up one hit in the bottom of the ninth.

 

Union and Rochester complete the season series with a noon doubleheader at Buck Ewing Field on Sunday, April 8.
