SCHENECTADY, N.Y.- The speed of all-star sophomore forward
Émilie Arseneault scored the game-winning goal with less than two minutes left of the game to give the Union College women's ice hockey team a 4-3 win over the University of Maine.
While Arseneault scored the game-winner, sophomore forward Lauren Cromartie scored two goals back-to-back in the second period for the Dutchwomen to keep them in the game.
Union is now 3-13-1 and Maine is now 5-10-5 overall. The win is the Dutchwomen's first since Oct. 17 against Sacred Heart. It is also the second win for sophomore goaltender Kate Gallagher.
After junior defenseman Elsa Perushek recovered the puck from the Union zone, she made a quick forward pass to Arseneault down the middle. Arseneault's speed did not match the Black Bear defense as the forward scored the goal that gave Union the win.
Freshman forward Jeannie Sabourin guided the puck around the back of Maine's goal followed by a quick pass to Cromartie, who was standing outside the crease. Cromartie found an open spot at the goal to deliver her first goal of the game and give Union a 3-2 lead at 13:43 into the second period.
Cromartie scored her second goal about four minutes later with help from freshman forward Rhianna Kurio and sophomore defenseman Chelsey Heinhuis, extending Union's lead to two.
Before the second intermission, forward Darcia Leimgruber scored the goal outside the crease.
Trailing by one at the start of the third period, Maine tied the game five minutes into the period when forward Jessica Ouellette took a shot outside the crease with help form forward Taryn Peacock and defenseman Jessica Bond.
After junior defenseman Callee Heywood scored Union's first goal five minutes into the second period when Heinhuis made a front pass to Heywood and her shot from the left side of the goal post found the net.
Union faced a five-on-three penalty kill midway through the second period. The Dutchwomen defense, led by Gallagher, successfully killed the penalties. Maine took only three shots during the span of the five-on-three penalty.
Gallagher made 33 saves against Maine. It is the third time this season that Gallagher stopped 30 or more shot.
Union will finish the 2009 year on Saturday against the Black Bears. Faceoff is at 2 p.m.
