POUGHKEEPSIE, NY -- Senior utility player #Shawn Johnston, playing in his final collegiate game, led Union in a doubleheader split with three hits and two RBI. Union won game one 7-2, but lost the second 10-4. The Dutchmen finishes the 2009 campaign with a 13-20 overall record and a 7-14 conference mark. Vassar concludes with a 6-29 mark and a 3-21 Liberty League showing.
During game one, Johnston went 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored. He put the finishing touches on the game one win when he doubled to left field to drive in Union's seventh and final run. Earlier in the game he scored on a sac fly by junior first baseman
Colin McKelligan.
The run scored gave Union a 4-0 lead in the top of the fourth. Sophomore third baseman got the Dutchmen rolling in the top of the third with a solo, two-out home run.
After Vassar pulled within two, 4-2, in the fifth, Union scored two runs in the sixth thanks to triples by senior centerfielder
Pat Wilson and freshman shortstop
Kevin Dexter.
Senior
Joshua McKelligan earned his second win of the season, going the distance and striking out three batters.
In the second game, the host team jumped out to a 7-0 lead through three innings before Union scored twice in the fourth.
Colin McKelligan led off with a triple and Johnston drove him on with a single through the infield. Senior right fielder
Paul Mene followed with a triple to score Johnston.
A two-run shot by Wilson in the top of the sixth produced Union's fourth run before the game was called after the half inning.
Junior
Andy Brown was given the loss after throwing three innings despite only allowing two earned runs.
