SCHENECTADY, N.Y. - The Union College swimming & diving teams defeated Liberty League opponent Hamilton on Saturday afternoon at the Alumni Gym pool. The men's team won by a score of 139-92 while the women won by a score of 127-115. It was the final meet at home this season for both the Dutchmen and Dutchwomen.
Brian Scarlett and
Steve Schapp each picked up three event wins for the Dutchmen. Together they won the 400 yard freestyle along with
Billy Breitweiser and
Todd Herman. The team finished the relay with a time of 3:14.81.
Schapp picked up a huge win in the 1650 yard freestyle. Schapp turned in a time of 17:05.85 while
Robert Wagner (17:25.49) finished second. Hamilton's Tom Cyran (17:38.29) led the Continentals by finishing third in the event.
Schapp's second win won in the 500 yard freestyle, turning in a time of 4:51.89 to best Hamilton's Bowie Sievers' 4:57.18.
Scarlett's time of 1:47.78 in the 200 yard freestyle earned him first place. Hamilton's Taylor Hogenkamp (1:48.21) finished second.
In the 100 yard backstroke, the race was close. Scarlett picked up the win with a time of 55.12 while
Michael Mooney recorded a time of 55.57.
Kevin Jung (54.09) and
Lucas Tiziani (54.10) finished first and second, respectively in the 100 yard butterfly. Hamilton's Chris Chaponis led his team with a time of 54.41.
On the diving board,
Ian Drillinger picked up wins in the one (279.44) and three (289.58) meter events.
On the women's side,
Priscilla Wright picked up three event wins while
Erica Fugger and
Lexi Bascom picked up two.
Bascom and Wright teamed up with
Maria Prendergast and
Andrea Marois to win the 200 yard medley relay with a time of 1:53.60. Wright and Fugger also teamed up with
Diana Fletcher and
Suzanne Foley to win the 400 yard relay (3:44.15).
Wright's third win was in the 50 yard freestyle, where she turned in a time of 25.21. Prendergast (25.39) finished second and Megan Gibbons (25.49) led the Continentals to a third place finish.
Bascom picked up her second win in the 100 yard backstroke with a time of 1:03.70.
Annora Brennan finished second, recording a time of 1:04.67.
On the diving board,
Meredith Nearpass won the three meter dive with a score of 243.75.
Lia D'Ambrosio (188.77) and
Rachel Cohen (172.35) finished second and third, respectively.
Union concludes the regular season on Feb. 6 at Ithaca. The meet is scheduled to start at 2 p.m.
