Union defeats Hartwick but falls to Springfield College

ONEONTA, N.Y. - The Union College swimming & diving teams split two meets Saturday at Hartwick College.  The Dutchwomen won 141-99 over the host Hawks but were defeated 86-156 by Springfield College. The Dutchmen defeated the host Hawks by a score of 134-103 but were downed by Springfield College 105-136.

In the meet against Hartwick, Erica Fugger and Kelly Geary finished first and second respectively in the 200 yard freestyle. Fugger turned in a time 2:00.76 while Geary marked a time of 2:06.77.

Priscilla Wright (25.48) and Maria Prendergast (25.65) also had a first place, second place finish, respectively, in the 50 yard freestyle.

Kaleigh Ahern won the 200 yard IM with a time of 2:14.70 while Andrea Marois won the 200 yard butterfly with a time of 2:20.36.

In the diving part of the meet, Meredith Nearpass won the one-meter dive with a score of 200.25. She also won the three-meter dive with a score of 196.45.

In the meet against Springfield College, Wright and Ahern each picked up a win in their events. Wright won the 50 yard butterfly with a time of 25.48. Ahern won the 200 yard IM with a time of 2:14.70.

On the men's side against Hartwick, Brian Scarlett and Michael Mooney picked up first and second place finish in the 200 yard backstroke, respectively. Scarlett finished with a time of 2:01.17 and Mooney marked a 2:04.21.

In the 500 yard freestyle, Stephen Schapp (4:56.54), Ryan McLaughlin (5:09.01) and Billy Breitweiser (5:09.58) finished second, third and fourth, respectively.

Todd Herman came close to winning a couple of races. In the 50 yard freestyle relay, Herman finished second with a time of 22.63. In the 100 yard freestyle, Herman finished second with a time of 50.09, just short from winner Nolan Manley's 50.04 time.

Against Springfield College, Schapp (10:12.13) and McLaughlin (10:36.26) picked up first and second place finishes, respectively, in the 1,000 yard freestyle.

Scarlett and Mooney finished first and second, respectively, in the 200 yard backstroke.

Union returns to Liberty League action next Saturday at Rensselaer. The meet is scheduled to start at 6 p.m.
