SCHENECTADY, N.Y. - Junior winger Amanda Trunzo led the scoring for Dartmouth College women's hockey team (11-12-2) with two goals scored in an effort to defeat Union College (5-25-1), 4-0, on Friday night at Messa Rink during the third annual 'Pink at the Rink.' The win gives Dartmouth an 8-10-1 conference record while the Dutchwomen are now 1-17-1 ECAC Hockey play.
The second period belonged to Trunzo, who scored her 15th and 16th goals of the season to help the Big Green's cause. Her first came at 6:32 of the period from senior Sarah Parsons second assist on the evening (team leading 20th on the year). Trunzo, who received a fortuitous ricochet off the boards, found the puck at her stick and forced the shot between the legs of Dutchwomen freshman netminder
Alana Marcinko. Her second goal came late in the period, 19:11, on assists from senior captain Jenna Cunningham (nine helpers on the year) and senior Sarah Toupal (six assist this season).
After a scoreless battle in the first 18 minutes of play, Dartmouth picked up two quick goals at the end of the first period to go into the locker room up 2-0. The first goal came at 18:01 of the period, during Dartmouth's first power play of the contest. Cunningham scored on a rebound in front off a save from Marcinko. The goal was Cunningham's 17th on the season as Parsons picked up her team leading 19th assist on the play.
On a diving backhanded goal from freshman Sasha Nanji (six goals on the season), Dartmouth picked up its second goal of the period at 19:06. The assist arrived off a pass from freshman Camille Dumais, her 14th assist. Both goals in the second period were scored after Union had impressively killed two of Dartmouth's power plays, in which Marcinko stopped point blank shots.
The Dutchwomen found it difficult to find their offense in the second period as they registered four penalties. Union's best opportunity of the period came at 16:29 of the period when freshman winger
Jeannie Sabourin skated in on a two versus one fast break. The shot was denied by freshman goalie Whitney Woodcox, who made 14 saves in the contest.
A scoreless third period of play was highlighted by back and forth action in both team's offensive halves. Union held Dartmouth to only seven shots, compared to 16 and 19 shots in the previous two periods.
Union operated with two goalies on the evening, as sophomore
Kate Gallagher replaced Marcinko at the start of the third period. The two goaltenders combined for a total of 38 saves on the evening.
The Dutchwomen resume play on Saturday, at 4 p.m. for their final home game of the season.
