WINTER HAVEN, FL - The Union College baseball team opened the 2012 season against Allegheny College (2-4) in Florida on Sunday, splitting a doubleheader. The Dutchmen defeated the Gators 5-3 in the second game after falling 6-2 in the first.
Phil Kemp started game two, allowing seven hits and three earned runs. The junior walked three and struck out five, while Allegheny's Dylan Malone allowed 10 hits with five runs, three of which were earned.
The Dutchmen scored four runs in the first three innings, with the Gators finally answering with three runs in the bottom of the third. Union would hold Allegheny without another run for the remainder of the game, despite five more hits in the final four innings.
Tyler Heck tallied two runs for Union, with sophomore
Joe Bradlee and
Nicholas Ranalli scoring, as well. After he tripled to right center, sophomore
Vincent Esposito ran home to give Union a 3-0 lead. Bradlee and
Dylan Katz-Wicks each had an RBI.
Union would score their final run of the game when junior
Jason Cohen singled through the left side, allowing Ranalli to advance to third base. The senior was then able to run home after an error from the Gators' left fielder. With three strike outs from Kemp, the Dutchmen were able to hold the score at 5-3.
Allegheny scored in four of seven innings with three runs coming from the top of the third in the first game.
Dane O'Neil pitched all seven innings for the Dutchmen, allowing 10 hits and six earned runs. The Gators' Mike Pezzone allowed five hits and one earned run in six innings, while Phil Morrissette finished with one hit and one earned run. After stealing second base in the bottom of the fourth, Esposito later scored to put Union on the board to make it 4-1.The Dutchmen would not score again until the bottom of the seventh inning, when freshman
Ryan Atkins pinch hit and tripled to center field, drviving in Ranalli.
Union returns to action in Florida tomorrow, March 19th, at 4:00 p.m. against Sewanee University.
