2012 Capital One Academic All-America At-Large Team
All-Time Union College Academic All-Americans
TOWSON, MD - Sophomore goaltender
Troy Grosenick has been selected to the 2012 Capital One Academic All-America At-Large Team, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America.
Grosenick was selected to the Third Team, and is one of 45 student-athletes honored for the three teams. He is one of just six men's ice hockey players named to the team, which also includes NCAA Division I programs for the sports of fencing, golf, gymnastics, lacrosse, skiing, swimming, tennis, volleyball, water polo, and wrestling. Grosenick was a First Team All-District selection in May, and only First Team All-District honorees are eligible for Academic All-American honors.
"This is a tremendous honor for Troy," said Union Head Coach
Rick Bennett. "From the coaching staff's perspective we're really proud of Troy's award. He is a model student-athlete and sets a great example on the ice and in the classroom. To be selected as an Academic All-American is a great honor for not only our program, but for Union College."
The sophomore becomes only the second men's ice hockey player in Union history to be named Academic All-American. Stephane Boileau was a Second Team selection in 2010. He is the 17th student-athlete at Union to receive this honor, which has been presented 20 times including two times to Tom Anacker (1970-71) and three times to Erika Eisenhut (2005-06). Baseball player Tyler Heck was selected earlier this spring.
Grosenick, a Hobey Baker Award finalist, also had an outstanding year off the ice. He earned the Thomas VanArden Dukehart Award for having the team's highest GPA (3.83) and was a finalist for ECAC Hockey Student-Athlete of the Year Award. Grosenick v
olunteered as a notetaker in his History of Mexico class through Office of Student Services, helping disabled students at Union with their studies. He also served as a volunteer tutor, helping teammates and non student-athletes with coursework over the year.
On the ice, Grosenick who entered the season with just one career start, had an exceptional campaign in net for the Dutchmen. In his first year as a starter, Grosenick ranked first in conference action in goals-against average (1.60); save percentage (.940); and win percentage (.767).
At 22-6-3 overall, Grosenick, who has started 33 of 41 games, finished the season second in the nation in goals-against average (1.65), save percentage (.936), and winning percentage (.758). His five shutouts on the season matched Kris Mayotte '06 for the single-season school record. Grosenick shattered school single-season goals-against average and save percentage records established by
Keith Kinkaid (2010-11) and Trevor Koenig (1996-1997). He earned the Ken Dryden Award as ECAC Hockey Goaltender of the Year.
