Dutchwomen earns first dual meet win against rival RPI 132-105

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – The Dutchwomen swimming & diving squad had the first place finisher in nine of 13 events to aid Union in their first dual meet win against Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute with a score of 132-105 Friday night at Alumni Gymnasium Pool.

In the 1650-yard freestyle event, Union was able to take the top three spots to earn 16 of 19 points in the event. Liberty League Swimmer of the Week Anne Trojanowski paced the trio with an 18:13.97 time. Danielle Proper was the runner-up as she posted an 18:37.46 time while Madeline Ashworth was clocked in at 18:44.83. Trojanowski and Ashworth went first and second in the 500-yard freestyle as the duo tallied times of 5:25.86 and 5:30.51 respectively.

In the 200-yard freestyle event, Danielle Young earned the first place finish, being timed at 2:01.27 while Trojanowski placed second trailing Young by 55 milliseconds. Young also took the 100-yard freestyle event, clocking in at 56.79. Diana Fletcher came away with a top finish as well in the 50-yard freestyle as she posted a 26.34 time.

Much like in the 1650-yard freestyle, Union had the top three swimmers in the 200-yard IM taking 16 of 19 points available. Brittany Kenny paced the group with a 2:15.03 time while Emily Opolski and Rachel Clegg earned times of 2:17.39 and 2:20.39 respectively.

Brittany Kenny tallied another individual win as she posted a 1:02.24 time in the 100-yard backstroke. Clegg tallied an individual win of her own in the 100-yard breaststroke coming in at 1:13.02.

Sarah Dimmitt was the lone Union representative on the boards as the freshman placed second on the 1mtr and third on the 3mtr with scores of 247.15 and 236.00 respectively.

The Dutchwomen capped off the night with a first place finish in the 200-yard freestyle relay as Fletcher, Young, Opolski and Janine Cerutti compiled a time of 1:43.78 to complete the victory.

Union will host again next weekend, as Middlebury will compete with Union in a dual meet on Saturday, January 19 beginning at 2:00 p.m.
