Welch and Z. Wahl top finishers for Dutchmen in losses to Hartwick and Springfield

ONEONTA, N.Y. - Andrew Welch and Zach Wahl headlined the men's swimming squad in the 200-yard backstroke and 200-yard butterfly respectively. Despite their efforts, Union was defeated in dual meets to Hartwick and Springfield with scores of 96-145 and 96-147 Saturday afternoon.
 
Welch finished nearly three seconds ahead of his opponent in the 200-yard backstroke nearly finishing under two minutes with a 2:00.41 time. Zach Wahl tallied a sub two-minute time in the 200-yard butterfly with a 1:58.96 time.
 
Freshman Matthew Hellauer put together a second and third place finish in the distant events of the 500 and 1,000-yard freestyles respectively. In the 500-yard, Hellauer was timed at 4:51.83 while in the 1,000-yard event, the Shelton, Conn. native came in at 10:08.09.
 
The 400-yard medley relay team of Welch, David Sorensen, and the brothers of Zach and Matt Wahl combined for a time of 3:36.58, which earned the foursome a second place finish in the meet.
 
In the diving events, Jeremy Sagaille was the top finisher for Union as he placed fourth in the 1mtr and third in the 3mtr with scores of 204.65 and 231.30 respectively.
 
Union will return to Alumni Gymnasium Pool as local rival RPI will come to Schenectady in a dual meet Friday, January 11 beginning at 6:00 p.m.
