Union Icers Edge Penn State, 4-3

UNIVERSITY PARK, PA -- Union extended its winning streak to four games, but it didn't come easily, as the 15th-ranked Dutchmen posted a 4-3 victory in front of 5,877 Happy Valley fans at the Pegula Ice Arena.  Rick Bennett's squad finished the month of November with a 6-1 record.

Playing without leading scorer Daniel Carr, who missed the first game of his career because of injury, Union opened a 3-0 lead, only to see Penn State bounce back to tie the contest in the third period.

Max Novak scored the game-winning goal with 6:50 left in regulation, one-timing a wrister in the circle off a feed from Daniel Ciampini, who was named the game's No. 1 Star.

Ciampini gave Union a 3-0 lead at 15:53 of the second period on a highlight reel goal.  With his back to the net, Ciampini tapped a loose puck between his legs that eluded goaltender Matthew Skoff.

Kevin Sullivan started the scoring at 11:11 of the first period, notching his first goal of the season by redirecting with his backhand a shot from Matt Wilkins.

Freshman Jeff Taylor bumped the lead to 2-0, ripping a slapshot from atop the left faceoff circle just 1:18 into the middle stanza.

Penn State's comeback started with a power play goal at 19:37 of the middle period from Eric Scheid, who notched his team-best fifth maker after breaking in uncontested on goaltender Colin Stevens. The goal ended Stevens' shutout streak of 99 minutes, 18 seconds against PSU compiled over five periods dating to a shutout last season.

PSU then struck twice in the third period to tie the contest. Patrick Koudys launched a slap shot from just inside the blue line that found space under the crossbar at 7:13, which was followed by Kenny Brooks' one-timer at 10:21.

For the 11th time in 12 games this season, Union outshot its opponent (34-32).

Union (7-3-2) concludes its series against Penn State (3-6-1) tomorrow night at 7:00 p.m.
