ITHACA, NY – Junior forwards
Cole Ikkala and
Daniel Carr scored third period goals, but No. 20 men's ice hockey (15-12-5, 8-8-4 ECAC Hockey) was unable to rally from a three goal third period deficit at Cornell (11-13-3, 7-10-3 ECAC Hockey), falling 4-2 in front of 4,267 fans at Lynah Rink.
Trailing 3-0 entering the 3rd period, the Dutchmen quickly cut into Cornell's lead to make it a game. Ikkala took a pass off the wall from freshman forward
David Roy and fired a wrist shot into the top corner at 5:40.
Later in the period, Union finally broke through on its seventh power play opportunity of the game, as sophomore defenseman
Shayne Gostisbehere fed Carr cross ice, and the junior ripped a wrist shot into an open net at 14:12 to make it 3-2.
Union's best chance to even the game in the final minutes came when sophomore forward
Max Novak came off the end boards and drove to the net, but his shot from the slot was blocked by the Cornell defense.
Cornell's Greg Miller added an empty net goal at 19:30 to seal the win for the Big Red. Miller also scored in the first period on the power play on top of goals from John Knisley and Joakim Ryan, who helped the Big Red establish an early three-goal lead in the contest.
Union outshout Cornell 38-27 for the game, including a 16-6 advantage in the third period. Andy Iles made 36 stops in net for Cornell, while junior goaltender
Troy Grosenick (11-9-5) made 23 saves for the Dutchmen. Union finished the night 1-for-7 on the man advantage while Cornell went 1-for-3 on the power play.
For the fourth consecutive road contest, Union allowed the opposition to score first. Cornell, which outshot Union 11-6 in the first period, broke the scoreless tie on an unassisted goal by Knisley at 6:21.
Knisley lifted the stick of freshman defenseman
Tim Boyle to steal the puck in the Union zone. Knisley fired a wrist shot high past Grosenick to put Cornell up 1-0.
Just over two minutes later, Cornell struck again as Joakim Ryan beat Grosenick with a low wrist shot through traffic at 8:25.
The Big Red continued to apply pressure in the Union zone, as Grosenick made two great stops on wrap-around attempts before sophomore defenseman
Shayne Gostisbehere was called for holding at 9:31.
On the ensuing power play, Greg Miller jumped on a loose puck in the slot and beat Grosenick over the blocker at 10:13.
Late in the period with Union on its second man advantage of the frame, junior forward
Daniel Carr caught Iles out of position firing a shot off his chest. The puck bounced to freshman forward
David Roy, who missed a wide open net with just 20 seconds to play in the frame.
The Dutchmen generated more chances in the second period, outshooting the Big Red 16-10 in the frame, but were unable to break through.
In the opening minutes, with Christian Hilbrich in the penalty box for hooking, Gostisbehere had two blasts from the point stopped by Iles.
Later in the period, junior forward
Matt Hatch had a partial breakway on a chip pass from
Mat Bodie, but Hatch fired just wide of the far post.
Grosenick settled in and made a number of good stops in the frame for Union as well, his best on John McCarron's chance from between the circles at 12:59.
Union will return to Messa Rink for its final regular season series, starting with a game against St. Lawrence on Friday night at 7:00 p.m.
