SCHENECTADY, NY -- Dan Smith, a former star offensive lineman with the Union College football program, has been named as a full time assistant on the staff, The announcement was made by Head Coach
John Audino.
"We are very happy and excited to have Dan join our fine football staff on a full time basis," said Audino. "Dan has extensive knowledge of Union and our program. He was a quality player for us on the offensive line and has coached and recruited the quality student-athletes we have at Union. His desire and energy will be a welcome addition to our staff. We look forward to Dan coaching and leading our players on and off the field of play."
Smith began his coaching career assisting
Gary Holtz with offensive line coaching duties as a part time coach in 2012. Smith was named to the D3Football East Region All Star Second Team in his 2011 senior season, and also received unanimous Liberty League First Team honors. Smith was the veteran anchor of a line that opened holes for a variety of new and talented running backs in the 2011 season. His efforts also helped lead Union to the top passing offense in the LIberty League. Smith started at left tackle in 2011 and was a three year starter. He was a league second team selection in his junior year. Smith received the program's Jim Kohan Award, presented to the team's best offensive or defensive lineman, at the 2011 post season banquet.
During his playing career, Smith was active in the community with his teammates. He participated in the Wounded Warrior Project, which raised over $5,000, and also volunteered for the NFL Miracle League. The Miracle League featured a flag football league with children with disabilities.
