Mike Vecchione named Hobey Baker Hat Trick Finalist

CHICAGO, Ill--Union College men's hockey senior captain Mike Vecchione has been named one of three finalists for the 2017 Hobey Baker Memorial Award, the Hobey Baker Award Committee announced Thursday afternoon. Vecchione's selection marks the first time that a Union player has been named a top finalist for the award. 

Joining Vecchione in the Hobey Baker Hat Trick are senior defenseman Will Butcher of Denver and senior forward Zach Aston-Reese of Northeastern. 

"It's an honor to be a part of the Hobey Hat Trick alongside two elite players," Vecchione said. I'm extremely proud to represent Union in Chicago. I want to thank my family, friends, teammates and coaches who have always supported me and who ensured that I would never be complacent."

"Our program is honored and humbled to hear the news that Mike Vecchione has been chosen as a top three finalist for the Hobey Baker Award," head coach Rick Bennett said.  "Mike had a tremendous season and has earned the nomination to be considered one of the best players in college hockey.  His value to Union College hockey this past year was immeasurable.  He was a team-first player that was rewarded for his dedication to be the best all-around player on the ice.  Our staff wishes Mike and his family all the best going forward through the Hobey Baker process."

The 2016-17 ECAC Hockey Player of the Year, Vecchione had the best statistical season in Union history, producing a program-best 29 goals and 63 points. He finished tied for first in Division I in points, points per game (1.66) and game-winning goals (7) and led the nation with 21 multi-point games. He also ranked tied for second in shorthanded goals (4) and fourth in faceoff percentage (61.8).

The Saugus, Mass. native tied for the ECAC Hockey scoring title with 40 points, including a league-best 17 goals. He registered at least one point in 20 of 22 league games, leading the conference with five game-winning goals, including two in overtime, four shorthanded goals and a 60.2 faceoff percentage. He sat second in assists (23), multi-point games (12) and plus-minus (+16). 

Vecchione completed his career as the Union's all-time leading scorer (176 points). His 71 career goals place him second in program history, while his 105 career assists place him second.

This year's Hobey Baker Award winner will be announced Friday, April 7, 2017 from the Aon Grand Ballroom at Navy Pier in Chicago, Ill. during the NCAA Frozen Four. The 37th annual announcement will be televised live on the NHL Network at 6 p.m. ET, and at the Hobey website, www.hobeybaker.com.
