Last Time Out
Union won its first season opener since 2009 with a 30-7 win over national-powerhouse Husson University on Saturday, Sept. 1, at Frank Bailey Field. Sophomore quarterbackÂ
Will Bellamy threw for 370 yards and three touchdowns, with no interceptions. Wide outsÂ
Griffin Beal andÂ
Andre Ross Jr., both had over 100 yards receiving on the day, with Beal catching two TD passes, and Ross Jr., catching one. Union's defense limited Husson to just 237 yards of offense.
George Reed led the Dutchmen with 10 tackles. Minus Husson's opening possession, the Eagles only had two possession all game that crossed midfield.
Last Season vs Coast Guard
Union scored 21 points in the first half against Coast Guard to hold a 21-7 lead at the half during last year's contest at Frank Bailey Field. Both sides traded touchdowns in the second half as Union went on to defeat the Bears 28-13. In that game,
Vincent DiCaterino and
George Reed combined for four sacks, totaling a loss of 34 yards.
Who's Back
The Dutchmen return 74 letterwinners from last season's squad, including 2017 All-Liberty League First Team honorees
Jack Reilly (line backer) and
Griffin Beal (wide receiver). Union also returns four Second Team All-Liberty League honorees in
Ryan Ehrets (offensive line),
Vincent DiCaterino (defensive line),
Bobby Law (defensive line), and
Tucker Newman (defensive back).
Look for Union's defense to be a strength during the 2018 season, as nine of the 11 positions will be filled by returning veterans.
In the Back Field
In addition to finding a new quarterback, Union will also have a new starting running back after the graduation of
Connor Kinzelmann. Sophomore
Travis Demby is the returning tail back with the most experience, having ran for 200 yards during the 2017 campaign. First year
Ike Irabor also saw time during last week's scrimmage at Utica.
