Men's Tennis Ready to Make Noise in Postseason

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – The sixth-seeded Union College men's tennis team is headed to the postseason for the first time since 2014 and will take on third-seeded and ITA #35 Hobart College on Friday afternoon at Cornell University's Reis Tennis Center.

MATCH DETAILS: 5:00 p.m. – Reis Tennis Center (Ithaca, N.Y.)

THE TEAMS: Union (6-8, 3-5 Liberty League) is seeded sixth in the tournament while Hobart (12-6, 6-2 Liberty League) earned he third seed during the regular season. The other first-round match features fourth-seeded Ithaca College (5-12, 4-4 Liberty League) and fifth-seeded Vassar College (8-9, 4-4 Liberty League). Top seeded Skidmore College (13-5, 8-0 Liberty League) and second-seeded Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (9-6, 7-1 Liberty League) received byes into the semifinals.

POSTSEASON HISTORY: Union is making its first postseason appearance since a 5-0 loss to Vassar College in 2014. The Dutchmen are 10-27 in Liberty League Tournament play since 1998, but have only had two main-draw victories during that time – the last came in 2005, when sixth-seeded Union knocked off third-seeded Hobart. The conference stopped employing a back draw at the event in 2012.

LAST MEETING: Then-#36 Hobart defeated Union by an 8-1 score in Schenectady during the regular season on April 6, but the match was much closer than the score indicates. Two of the three doubles matches went to tiebreakers and three singles matches went to a third set in the tightly contested contest.

TOUGH COMPETITION: Head coach Brian Bowman put together a very challenging schedule for the Dutchmen this season, as five of Union's eight losses this season have come at the hands of nationally ranked competition, while all but one loss have some to regionally ranked foes.

WINNING WAYS: Freshman Cameron Klepper leads Union with 11 singles victories so far this season, the most victories by a Dutchman in a single season since at least 2006.
