ROME, N.Y. – The Union College women's golf team had an excellent start to the 2019-20 season this weekend, defeating William Smith College in a two-day dual match by the score of 691-827 on Saturday and Sunday at Rome Country Club.
The Dutchwomen started the year with a team round of 339 on Saturday, the third-lowest round in program history. The team followed that up with a 352 on Sunday to put the team at 691 for the weekend, trailing only last season's program-record 671 at St. Lawrence on the program two-day scoring ledger.
Senior
Molly Wiener was the top scorer on the weekend for Union, carding a weekend-best round of 81 on Saturday and then adding an 88 on Sunday. Her weekend score of 169 is tied for 10th on the school's two-day scoring list.
She was followed by sophomore
Ashley Harding, who finished at 171 after rounds of 83 and 88, and junior
Lisa Spagnuolo, who carded rounds of 85 and 89. Junior
Juls Sweet (90-91) and sophomore
Kiara Beckham (94-87) both finished the two days at 181.
Three Dutchwomen also made their collegiate debuts playing as individuals. First-year
Emily King had the team's third-best score of the weekend, firing rounds of 88 and 85 to finish at 173, while classmate
Alexandra Cymbal tied for the team's second-lowest round of the weekend with an 83 on Sunday following a 93 on day one. Fellow first-year
Colleen Buckley carded rounds of 92 and 90 in her debut as well.
Union will return to action next Saturday and Sunday at the St. Lawrence University Invitational.
