SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – Sophomore
Iyene Essien carded the fifth-lowest round in program history with a two-over-par 74 to take individual medalist honors at the Union Spring Invitational, held on a blustery Saturday at the Schenectady Municipal Golf Course.
As a team, Union carded its second-lowest round of the season on Saturday, shooting a 328 to finish one stroke back of SUNY Cortland (327) in second place and 14 shots behind first-place Ithaca College (314) on a day with plenty of good scoring.
Essien's 74 was good for a four-stroke victory over a trio of Ithaca golfers at 78, carding dual nines of 37 to post her fourth individual victory and seventh top-five finish in eight events so far this season. The sophomore had one birdie and one double bogey in a very steady nine, then came in with two bogies and one birdie to clinch the win.
Sophomore
Carinna Anastasio and senior
Shea White both finished in the top-10 as well on Saturday. Anastasio carded an 82, helped by a pair of birdies on the par-three 3rd and par-three 17th that matched Essien for most birdies in the field. White finished one stroke back with an 83, thanks to no holes higher than bogey on the day.
First-year
Emma Doherty shot an 89 and sophomore
Ella Golas finished with a 92 to round out Union's scoring quintet.
First-year
Claire Giletta carded her best score of the season playing as an individual, shooting a round of 85. Senior
Delaney Fox posted her best round of the spring season with a 98, while classmate
Emily Evans shot a 110.
Union will finish the spring season next weekend at the Liberty League Championships, held at Teugega Country Club in Rome on Friday and Saturday.
