Union Wins Twice on Day One of ITA Regionals

Day One Results

GENEVA, N.Y. –
The Union College men's tennis team earned a pair of victories on day one of the 2019 Intercollegiate Tennis Association Northeast Regional Championships, held at Hobart College's HWS Tennis Center and Bristol Field House.

Union brought eight entries to the event, easily the most in a single-season in school history.

Junior Austin Egna got the weekend off to a good start for the Dutchmen, cruising to a 6-1, 6-0 victory over St. Lawrence University's Alex Roslin. His run ended in the second round, however, as he was defeated by #5/8 seed Kaan Ayman of Hobart by a 6-0, 6-0 score.

Senior Del Schunk, sophomore Ioannis Binopoulos and freshman Aidan O'Brien all succumbed to ranked opponents in the first round. Schunk fell to top-seeded Alan Dubrovsky of Hobart, 6-1, 6-1, while O'Brien put a big scare into #5/8 seed Minos Stavrakas of Ithaca College before losing in a supertiebreaker, 2-6, 7-5, 1-0 (10-7). In a later match, Binopoulos was defeated 6-2, 6-4 by #3/4 seed Matt Michibata of The College of New Jersey.

Sophomore Cameron Klepper also came up short in his first-round match, as he lost to Hobart's Jack Ledford by a 6-1, 6-1 score.

Klepper and fellow sophomore Nick Weitzman provided one highlight in the opening round of doubles play, as the pair knocked off Ledford and Jett Wright of Hobart by an 8-4 score. The momentum could not get the duo onto the second day, however, as they fell 8-3 to Sahaj Somani and Pasquale Procacciano of the University of Rochester in the second round.

In other doubles action, Egna and his brother Max Egna were dropped by top-seeded JT Wynne and Noah Williamson of Skidmore College, 8-2, while Binopoulos and O'Brien were topped by another Skidmore pair, #5/8 seed Jason Keye and Jack McClaren, by an 8-3 score.

Union will return to the court next weekend at the Hamilton College Tournament beginning next Saturday.

Union College was my first choice among the many small liberal arts colleges I was planning to apply to. I first heard of the school from my teammate Zach Kaplan, who I knew from home. Once I went on my recruiting, visit I immediately fell in love with the school and all it had to offer.
