With the spring sports season canceled at its very beginning (or before it even started, for some Union teams) due to the COVID-19 pandemic, UnionAthletics.com will spend the next few months spotlighting many of the Union seniors whose athletic careers came to a premature end. Previous senior profiles can be viewed by heading to http://www.unionathletics.com/seniorspotlights.

Sean Cullen had one of the most prolific careers of any player to take the diamond as a Dutchman. A four-year starter with the Union baseball team, Cullen hit .333 in 34 games as a freshman before having one of the best seasons in program history as a sophomore, batting .422 with a program-record 70 hits to go with 40 runs batted in, 38 doubles and 38 runs scored to earn his first ABCA All-Region selection in leading Union to a Liberty League championship and NCAA Tournament berth. The pandemic robbed Cullen of the school's all-time hits record, as he finished his abbreviated season second in school history with 174 hits, just one back of the program record of 175. He also ranks third in career runs scored (102), second in doubles (38) and fourth in home runs (12) and RBIs (93). A two-time team captain of the Dutchmen, Cullen capped his career with first-team All-Liberty League honors and a second straight All-Region honor in 2019.

My favorite professor at Union was Professor Shelton Schmidt [Chauncey H. Winters Professor of Economics] because he is both funny and engaging. He was also my thesis advisor and helped me immensely with guiding me the right way to write it.Â

What advice would you give to younger athletes about their time at Union?
My advice to younger athletes would be to really commit yourself to your team and program, by sticking to your lift schedule, giving it your all in every practice, and maintaining both academic and athletic life. It feels great when you know all your hard work has paid off and you get to see it while you are in season.
