Senior Spotlight: Del Schunk

With the spring sports season canceled at its very beginning (or before it even started, for some Union teams) due to the COVID-19 pandemic, UnionAthletics.com will spend the next few months spotlighting many of the Union seniors whose athletic careers came to a premature end. Previous senior profiles can be viewed by heading to http://www.unionathletics.com/seniorspotlights.

A four-year member of the team and a two-year captain, Del Schunk has played a major role in the continued resurgence of the Union men's tennis team in recent years. As a freshman, he stepped up and won a team-best eight singles matches playing at the first, second and third flights, then moved into the first-singles role full-time as a sophomore and played a team-leading 20 singles matches. In his junior season, he co-captained the Dutchmen to six victories and the program's first qualification for the Liberty League Tournament. His 23 singles wins and 19 doubles victories over the last four seasons are some of the top totals in recent program history.

What has been your favorite moment as a student-athlete at Union?
My favorite moment as a student-athlete at Union was making it to Liberty League Tournament [as a junior] in 2019. It was a huge accomplishment for our program and showed how much our team had grown.

How has being a student-athlete at Union benefited you over the last four years?
Being a student-athlete has taught me time management skills and I have also benefited from the experience by making a large number of friends throughout schools in the Liberty League.

What has been your most meaningful experience outside of athletics?
My most meaningful experience outside of athletics is learning to appreciate academics and what they can offer me. Making connections outside of athletics can be difficult in a sense, since you don't share a similar sport, but learning to connect through my major and its classes has been incredibly meaningful.

Do you have plans for post-graduation yet?  If so, what are they?
I am planning on working as a paralegal at a law firm in New York City. I will then hopefully pursue a career in law.

What advice would you give to younger athletes about their time at Union?
If I could give any advice to younger athletes at Union it would be to cherish your time. This advice is definitely being heard more and more recently, but it is the best advice to be given.

Union College was my first choice among the many small liberal arts colleges I was planning to apply to. I first heard of the school from my teammate Zach Kaplan, who I knew from home. Once I went on my recruiting, visit I immediately fell in love with the school and all it had to offer.
