SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – Union College held its annual Prize Day on Saturday, with numerous Union College student-athletes combining to earn 11 honors in recognition for their academic success. Nine of Union's 26 varsity sports were represented with at least one award, with men's hockey and softball leading the way with two apiece.
For the first time in three years the ceremony shifted back to in-person. The campus community gathered to watch 112 prizes be awarded to honor students for achievement in academics, research, service and governance.
In addition to President David Harris, the Prize Day ceremony featured remarks from Michele Angrist, the Stephen J. and Diane K. Ciesinski Dean of Faculty and vice president for Academic Affairs; Fran'Cee Brown-McClure, vice president for Student Affairs and Dean of Students; Lynn Evans, class dean for Class of 2022; and Michelle Osborn, interim dean of studies.
Samuel S. Feuer (1925) Prize – To the senior premedical student with primary interest in dentistry and who has maintained the highest scholastic average over four years.
Julia Boule (Softball)
Hans Hainebach Memorial Prize in German Literature – To a sophomore or junior who has demonstrated particular promise as a student of German literature.
Lichuan Xiong (Women's Tennis)
Roger H. Hull Community Service Award – To the senior who has rendered the greatest sustained service to the greater Schenectady community by initiating or being actively engaged in an ongoing community service project.
Josh Kosack (Men's Ice Hockey)
Harold A. Larrabee Prize – To the student who has done the best work in philosophy during the year.
Henry Kahl (Men's Soccer)
John Lewis March Prize – To a senior who has shown increased interest and ability in psychology during the final two years of college.
Fletcher Fineman (Men's Ice Hockey)
Elias Peissner Prize – To an economics major who has done work of outstanding merit.
Ali Sommers (Women's Lacrosse)
Martin Terry Resch Prize – To the senior who shows the greatest promise for advanced study in pure or applied mathematics.
Laura Vinton (Women's Basketball)
Calvin G. Schmidt (1951) Prize – To the member of the junior class who has contributed most to the betterment of student life on campus.
Anna Zdunczyk (Softball)
Joel D. Ticknor (1960) Prize – To the graduating senior who has demonstrated a capacity for long term thinking and who plans to use his/her career to help solve the world's most pressing problems.
Sophia Anderson (Women's Crew)
Frances Travis Award – To a student who is working their way through college and who demonstrated unusual responsibility and self-reliance.
Glory Moncion Allen (Women's Track and Field)
The Lee, William, Dr. Norman '43 and Dr. George '53 Wrubel Memorial Prize – To a senior preparing for dentistry or medicine, based on both academic achievement and character.
