TROY, N.Y. – After a huge day on the gridiron to help the Union College football team to a win over #25 Delaware Valley University in the first round of the NCAA DIII Tournament, junior
James Gillespie was named the Liberty League Defensive Player of the Week, the conference announced on Monday.
Gillespie made four solo tackles and two interceptions in the win. The junior intercepted the Aggies on their first drive of the game. In the final seconds of the second quarter, Gillespie intercepted a pass at midfield, running it back 50 yards for a touchdown to put Union up by two scores.
The two picks on Saturday mark the second time this season the junior has recorded two interceptions in a game.
Gillespie is the second member of the defense to earn Liberty League Defensive Player of the Week accolades after senior
Jaden Duncan was honored on September 25.
Gillespie and the rest of the team travel to #7 Johns Hopkins University for the second round of the NCAA DIII tournament. Kickoff is scheduled for noon at Homewood Field.
