Union Nabs Rookie and Coaching Staff of the Year; Three Named All-Conference

TROY, N.Y. – First-year forward Maddie Greco was named the Liberty League Rookie of the Year and head coach Kelly Harchetts and her staff earned Liberty League Co-Coaching Staff of the Year honors while three players earned All-Conference honors for the 2023 season, the Liberty League announced on Wednesday morning.

In addition to the major awards, Greco was named to the All-Liberty League first team alongside sophomore Megan Dorsey, while senior Grace Krebs capped her career with All-Liberty League second-team honors. Greco and Dorsey are only the third teammates in program history to earn All-Conference first-team recognition in the same season and just the second and third underclassmen ever at Union to earn first-year laurels. The three honorees overall are tied for the program's most since 2010.

Greco is the first player in program history to win Conference Rookie of the Year outright and the first to be honored since Heather Poisson '22 was recognized as Co-Rookie of the Year in 2017. The first-year tied for the conference lead in goals this year with 13 and added two assists for 28 points, tying her with Dorsey for second in the Liberty League in scoring. Her 13 goals are a Union single-season rookie record and tied for eighth on the school single-season scoring list, while she finished only three goals short of the combined total of every rookie on the Liberty League's seven other schools. At the national level, Greco finished her season tied for second in Division III in goals among first-year players and fifth in points.

After missing the latter half of her first season after a promising start, Dorsey came back with a very strong sophomore campaign, matching Greco for the team lead in points with 10 goals and a team-best eight assists. Her eight assists ranked second in the Liberty League this season and are tied for third in Union's single-season list, while her 28 points sit just outside the school single-season top-10. The Pembroke, Mass., native recorded at least one point in a team-leading 12 games this season and ended the year with points in eight of her last 10 contests, including the team's lone goal in the Liberty League Tournament against Vassar College. In her first two seasons at Union, Dorsey has scored 12 goals with 12 assists for 36 points in 27 games.

Krebs continued to showcase her versatility on the field for Union in her final season, moving to back for her senior year and earning her first career All-Conference honor in the process. The Airmont, N.Y., native served as an anchor to the Union defensive unit and still finished with a career-best-tying four goals with two assists for 10 points, finishing her career with three goals in the last four games. For her career, the forward-turned-midfielder-turned-back scored 12 goals with 11 assists for 35 points in 53 games, playing in every game over her three years.

Union earns Liberty League Coaching Staff of the Year honors for the first time since 2005 and only the second time in program history. Led by 12th-year head coach Kelly Harchetts and assistant coaches Alicia Aragosa and Katie Rich, the Garnet Chargers recorded 11 wins for the second straight season and earned the program's first postseason berth in 13 years, doing so with a team that regularly started at least five underclassmen and had first-years and sophomores account for over 67 percent (39 of 58) of the team's goals this season. The squad's 58 goals are tied for second-most in a season in program history, just one away from the record set in 2007.

With five of the team's top-six scorers set to return next season, the Garnet Chargers look to be in a good position to keep the positive momentum moving forward into the 2024 campaign.
