SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – First-year
John Prokop of the Union College men's hockey team has been named to the Hockey Commissioner's Association Tim Taylor Rookie of the Year watch list, the association announced on Thursday afternoon.
Prokop has had an excellent season, scoring four goals and adding 13 assists for 17 points in his rookie campaign for Union. The blueliner has appeared in all 28 games for Union and totaled four multi-point games in his young career. Prokop's first collegiate goal came on the power-play against UNH on Dec. 30, which was ultimately the game winner.
The Wausau, Wisc. native was named ECAC Hockey Rookie of the Week back on Oct. 17, for his performance where he tallied five assists over the weekend against Bentley and RIT.
Prokop is one of two rookie defensemen recognized on the list, joining Boston University's Lane Hutson.
The Rookie of the Year award is given out annually to the top rookie in men's NCAA Division I hockey since 2007. A total of 27 players were named to the watch list with six representatives from ECAC Hockey. The winner of the award will be announced during the Frozen Four in Tampa, Fla. in April.
Prokop and the rest of the men's team will be back in action on Friday, February 10, as they skate against Yale. Puck drop from Messa Rink is set for 7 p.m.
