Kobe Mentzer and
Kyle Patlove as well as sophomores
Caleb Miller and
Andrew Keaveney of the Union College baseball team were recognized for their play on the diamond and their success in the classroom with spots on the 2023-24 Academic All-District Baseball Team, selected by College Sports Communicators and announced on Tuesday.
To be nominated for College Sports Communicators (formerly CoSIDA) Academic All-District honors, student-athletes must participate in at least 90 percent or start at least 66 percent of the team's games, maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.50 or higher, and reach sophomore athletic and academic standing at the school. All Academic All-District honorees are considered for advancement to the CSC Academic All-America ballot, the results of which will be announced in July.
Mentzer earns Academic All-District honors for the second straight year. Mentzer appeared in all 41 games with a .365 batting average as a senior. The outfielder broke his own single-season walk record with 31 this season and Union's program record with 82. Mentzer recorded 58 hits, 11 doubles, one triple, two home runs, 46 RBI, and 42 runs scored to earn All-Liberty League Honorable Mention.
Patlove earns his first Academic All-District honor as a senior. The reliever was named to the D3baseball.com All-Region Second Team after a stellar senior campaign. The senior appeared in a career-high 16 games and pitched 25.2 inning with a 4-0 record and two saves. Patlove posted a 3.16 ERA while holding opposing batters to a .247 average.
Miller adds another award to his sophomore year after being named the Liberty League Player of the Year, an All-Liberty League First Team honoree, an All-Region honoree for both D3baseball.com and the ABCA/Rawlings All-Region III team. Miller appeared in 40 games for Union with a .374 average and a 1.081 OPS with 58 hits, 12 doubles, four triples, seven home runs, 44 RBI, and 44 runs scored. Miller recorded a 24-game hitting streak which was the longest in over a decade for Union. The catcher ranked in the top three in the conference in runs (third), hits (second), doubles (fourth), triples (second), home runs (second), and RBI (third).
Keaveney earns his first Academic All-District honor as a sophomore. The infielder appeared in 32 games for Union with 32 starts before injury cut his season short. Keaveney batted .301 with 34 hits, seven doubles, one home run, 24 RBI, and 23 runs scored while helping to turn 14 double plays.
With the four honorees from baseball this year, Union student-athletes have now earned 200 Academic All-District honors since 2001.
