TROY, N.Y. – Three Union College student-athletes received weekly honors from the Liberty League and five others were recognized with honor roll selections for the week ending on October 19, the conference office announced on Monday afternoon.
Women's Soccer Defensive Player of the Week: Rachel Berliner
Berliner made a career-high 10 saves to keep the match scoreless in Saturday's 0-0 draw with Ithaca, including six saves in the second half to keep the Bombers off the board..
Men's Soccer Rookie of the Week: Gavin Blake
Blake came off the bench to score the go-ahead goal in the 44th minute as Union defeated Ithaca by a 2-1 score on Saturday.
Women's Swimming & Diving Rookie of the Week: Ali Sweeney
Sweeney helped Union to victories over Roberts Wesleyan (176-105) and Westfield State (179-81) with three wins and a runner-up finish. Sweeney swept the breaststroke events, winning the 50 breast (33.59) and 100 breast (1:13.56), and placed second in the 200 individual medley (2:25.72). She also swam the breaststroke leg of the winning 400 medley relay that posted a time of 4:16.53.

Field Hockey: Maddie Greco
Greco scored once in both Union games to give her a conference-leading 15 goals on the year. She provided the second Union goal in a 3-1 win over Skidmore on Friday, in the process becoming the school's all-time leading scorer with her 47th career tally. She followed up by scoring the first goal of the game on Sunday at St. Lawrence.
Men's Soccer: Matt Guiliano
Guiliano scored his first collegiate goal in the 22nd minute to put Union ahead for the first time and played all 90 minutes in the team's 2-1 win over Ithaca on Saturday.
Men's Swimming & Diving: Nick Megas
Megas helped lead Union to a 143-136 victory over Roberts Wesleyan with a pair of wins and two runner-up finishes. Megas captured the 50 freestyle in 21.92 and anchored the 400 medley relay to second place with a time of 3:42.22. He also placed second in the 100 freestyle (48.97) and led off the winning 400 freestyle relay (3:17.78), giving Union a 4.72-second lead after the opening leg. Union's 400 free relay's win clinched the meet victory for the Garnet Chargers.
Women's Swimming & Diving: Chloe Matthews
Matthews powered Union to wins over Roberts Wesleyan and Westfield State with three victories and a third-place finish. Matthews anchored the winning 400 medley relay (4:16.53) and added individual wins in the 200 freestyle (2:04.51) and 50 butterfly (28.04). She also swam the second leg of Union's third-place 400 freestyle relay that finished with a time of 3:56.34.
Women's Volleyball: Shannon McGrath
McGrath had another excellent effort in Union's 3-2 comeback win over Vassar on Saturday, putting down 20 kills on .211 hitting to go with 12 digs and five service aces. The senior had eight kills to pace all players as the visitors took the opening set, then put down five balls as Union won the fourth set to stay alive. McGrath ended the match with two kills, a block and an ace in the decisive fifth set as Union won in Poughkeepsie for the first time since 2013.
