CORTLAND, N.Y. – The Union College women's golf team posted three of the four lowest individual scores of the day on the way to a team round of 330 to sit in first place out of 10 teams at the midway point of the Cortland Martin/Wallace Invitational, held on Saturday at Cortland Country Club.
Union put together its second-best round of the season and sixth-best in program history on a rainy and windy Saturday to hold a two-stroke lead over Ithaca College and a nine-stroke edge on host SUNY Cortland at the midway point of the weekend.
"It was an unbelievable effort throughout the lineup," said head coach
Matt McPhillips. "Rain and wind all day brought out the grittiness and intensity in this team. It's a fantastic start to the weekend and I can't wait to see what tomorrow brings."
First-year
Iyene Essien is the clubhouse leader after day one following a round of six-over 78. Cortland's Gina Milazzo sits one stroke back after a 79 on Saturday, while senior
Liz Bentsianov and junior
Shea White are two of four players tied for third place after rounds of 80 on day one.
First-year
Carinna Anastasio rounded out Union's scoring quartet with a round of 92, followed close behind by senior
Katerina Dimacopoulos with a 93.
Union will look to remain atop the leaderboard tomorrow with day two of the Martin/Wallace Invitational.
