TROY, N.Y. – Sophomore
Iyene Essien started the year with Liberty League Player of the Week honors and two others were named to their sports' weekly honor rolls for the week ending on September 1, the conference office announced on Tuesday afternoon.
Women's Golf Player of the Week: Iyene Essien
Essien got her second year off to an excellent start by carding a two-over round of 72 to earn top honors in Saturday's dual match with Ithaca College. She started her round with a birdie on the par-five opening hole and made the turn in three-over 38 before coming in with a one-under 34, recording six pars to go with one bogey and birdies on the par-five 15th and par-four 18th on the back nine. Her score, the second-lowest score both overall and in relation to par in program history, was eight strokes clear of the field.
Honor Roll Mentions:
Field Hockey: Megan Dorsey
Dorsey gave Union the lead for good in Friday's season-opening 2-1 win over VTSU Castleton, scoring at the final whistle of the second period. The senior finished the game with eight shots, single-handedly outshooting the entire Spartan squad.
Women's Volleyball: Shannon McGrath
McGrath was named to the All-Tournament Team at the Haverford Invitational over the weekend, averaging 4.0 kills per set with 52 kills on .263 hitting against quality opposition. She started the weekend with 14 kills, 13 digs and three aces against 2024 NCAA Tournament team Stevens, helping Union take the Ducks to five sets. She hit .340 with 18 kills and two errors in a four-setter against host Haverford, then took over to lead Union to a win over Lebanon Valley, putting down 20 kills to go with 14 digs in a 3-1 win.
