Men's Tennis Finishes Day One of Garnet Charger Invite

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – The Union College men's tennis team saw several good results and remained alive in several flights after day one at the Garnet Charger Invitational, held on Saturday at the Union Tennis Courts.

Seven different Union players had at last one victory on the first day of the weekend, including a team-best three wins each for sophomores Jesus Sosa and Arhan Gupta.

The pair both earned one win each on day one in the "A" singles bracket before losing in the semifinals. Sosa defeated Drew's Jesse Faro by a 6-1, 7-5 score before falling to Trinity's Luca Garbati by the same score. Gupta defeated Debarshi Sen of RPI, 7-5, 6-2, in the first round before a 6-0, 6-3 loss to Sam Park of Trinity.

Union came up short in a pair of supertiebreakers in "B" Singles action, as first-year Simon Philip fell 6-1, 3-6, (10-7) to RPI's Siddharth Srinivasan and junior Daniel Saxe lost a 6-1, 1-6, (10-7) match to Trinity's Maxim Golubenko.

Junior Shreyas Kode picked up one win in the top-half of "C" Singles action with a 7-6, 6-3 victory over Ryan Tingley of Trinity, but came up short to Tingley teammate Maxim Kauffman in the semifinals, 7-5, 6-0. Sophomore Vivaan Gupta dropped a 6-1, 6-3 decision to John Pope of Trinity in the bottom half of the bracket.

The home team recorded a pair of first-round wins in "D" Singles, but again those wins did not translate to semifinal success. First-year Alain Uzelac came back to outlast St. Lawrence's Preston Mcarthy, 4-6, 6-3, (10-6) and sophomore Riichi Nagatake swept Drew's Devan Sutaria with a pair of 6-0 scores; however, both competitors ended their runs in the semis, with Uzelac falling 6-3, 7-5 to Brandon Felcher of Trinity and Nagatake coming up on the wrong end of a 6-4, 6-2 match with RPI's Felix Puyplat.

First-year Reilly Fowles is still alive in the "E" Singles bracket after two wins on Saturday. The newcomer started off with an 8-7 (7-1) win over Sebastian Boada of SLU, then took down Drew's Pharell Longenbach to reach the semifinals. Senior Christian Crowder started his "E" Singles bracket by sweeping Drew's Kiran Bhattacharya before an 8-3 loss to Trinity's Thompson Brown in the quarterfinals.

In doubles play, Sosa and A. Gupta remain in the hunt in the "A" Doubles bracket thanks to a pair of wins on day one. The pair started off by outlasting Drew's Shivendra Perera and Nicolas Mobayed in a tiebreaker, 8-7 (7-5), then came back to roll past Trinity's Pope and Enrico Buoro, 8-3. The team's other doubles entry, Philip and V. Gupta, came a tiebreaker short from advancing in an 8-7 (7-2) loss to RPI's Sen and Cade Collingwood.

Crowder and Saxe won their only "B" Doubles match of the day, sweeping Sutaria and Bhattacharya of Drew by an 8-0 score to advance to tomorrow's semifinal. Kode and Nagatake could not join their teammates in the next round, falling 8-4 to SLU's Aidan Baracao and Bennett Stout.

Union will be back for day-two action at the Garnet Charger Invitational tomorrow beginning at 9 a.m. at the Union Tennis Courts.
