RIDGEFIELD, Conn. – The Union College women's golf team shot a round of 324 on Sunday to move one spot up the leaderboard and finish in eighth place at the Wesleyan Fall Invitational, held on Saturday and Sunday at Silver Spring Country Club.
Union's Sunday 324 tied for the fifth-lowest round in program history and gave the team a two-day score of 665 for the weekend, a mark that ranks eighth on the program two-day list. The Garnet Chargers held off Bates College (667) for the eighth spot in a stacked field that featured six of the nation's top-17 squads. WGCA #12 Bowdoin College shot 298-303-601 to earn a 10-shot victory over #8 Williams College.
Junior
Iyene Essien had an excellent day on the course on Sunday, carding a four-over 75 to tie for seventh on the school's single-round list and place her in a tie for 20th place overall with a weekend 158. She had two birdies, 11 pars and four bogeys in a very steady round, and finished the weekend tied for sixth in the field with 20 pars over her 36 holes.
First-year
Casey Mack followed up yesterday's 86 with an 82 today, posting dual nines of 41 with one birdie on each side to finish in 38th place at 168, one stroke ahead of junior
Carinna Anastasio in a tie for 39th place at 169 after a Sunday 88.
Sophomore
Emma Doherty had her best tournament score of the fall on Sunday with an 83, moving her up the leaderboard into 47th place with a weekend 174. Junior
Ella Golas also recorded the best round of her career on Sunday, carding an 84 to shave 18 strokes off yesterday's score and finish 54th at 186.
The weekend marks the end of Union's fall season, with the team finishing its nine events with a 336.4 scoring average. The Garnet Chargers will take time off this winter before returning to the course for its spring season.
