WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. – The Union College women's golf team shot a round of 347 to sit in 14th place after day one of the Williams Fall Invitational, hosted by Williams College on Saturday afternoon at Taconic Golf Club.
 
The Garnet Chargers ended day one 14th out of 15 teams in a stacked field, two shots back of Gustavus Adolphus College in 13th place and 12 shots ahead of York (Pa.) College in 15th. WGCA #5 Middlebury College shot a 297 to sit in first place after day one, seven shots ahead of the #8 Ephs in a field that features seven nationally ranked squads.
 
Junior Iyene Essien was Union's top finisher on day one, carding a nine-over 80 on the wet and rainy course. She shook off a span of five holes that saw her card four bogies and a double toward the end of her front nine with a steady back nine, carding six pars and three bogies to come in with a 39 and sit in a tie for 33rd place.
 
First-year Casey Mack sits in the top-50 at the midway point of the weekend after a round of 85 on Saturday, followed by junior Carinna Anastasio in 61st place at 88. Sophomores Claire Giletta (94) and Emma Doherty (100) rounded out Union's fivesome on day one.
 
The teams will be back on the course tomorrow morning beginning at 8:30 a.m.
