SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – Paced by a 78 from junior
Iyene Essien, the Union College women's golf team shot a round of 337 to move up into second place at the conclusion of the two-day Union Fall Invitational, held on Saturday and Sunday at Mohawk Golf Club.
Union battled the elements to improve five shots from yesterday's 342 to move past SUNY Cortland into second place with a two-day score of 679. Ithaca College finished the weekend at 641 to earn top honors, while Cortland took third at 682 and Vassar College finished fourth at 696.
Ithaca's Helena Winterberg and Vassar's Teaen Sweet shared individual medalist honors, finishing the weekend with a two-day score of 157.
Essien tied for the best score of the day on a soggy Sunday in Schenectady, shooting a five-over 78 to move up into third place at 160. After starting day two with four straight bogies, she rebounded with two birdies and two pars to finish the front nine with a 39, then came in with five straight pars for another 39. The junior finished the weekend as the field's top scorer on the par-fours, averaging 4.2 strokes per hole.
First-year
Casey Mack earned a top-10 finish for the Garnet Chargers as well, shooting an 82 on Sunday to finish in ninth place at 167. After going out with a 43, she used one birdie and six pars on the back nine to come in with a 39 and move one spot up the leaderboard.
Junior
Carinna Anastasio and sophomore
Emma Doherty both placed in the top-15 to round out the team's four top scorers. Anastasio shot an 86 on Sunday to finish the weekend in 12th place with a two-day score of 171, while Doherty shot 90-91 on the weekend to tie for 15th at 181. Doherty was the second-best scorer in the field on the course's three shortest holes, carding five pars and one bogey on the par-threes over the two days.
Union had three more entries finish in the top-20, with junior
Ella Golas (96-65-191), sophomore
Claire Giletta (92-101-193) and first-year
NaNa Simpson (95-100-195) placing 18th, 19th and 20th, respectively.
Union will be back in action next weekend at the Williams Fall Invitational beginning on Saturday afternoon in Williamstown.
