Hill Breaks 100 Fly Record on Day 2 of Champ Meet

ITHACA, N.Y. – Senior Drew Hill posted the fastest 100 butterfly time in program history with a 49.09 on Thursday night as the Union College men's swimming & diving team completed Day 2 of the 2026 Liberty League Swimming & Diving Championships, hosted by Ithaca College at Kelsey Partridge Bird Natatorium.

Hill entered the day with the second-best 100 fly time in Union history but had never broken 50 seconds. The senior from Scarsdale, N.Y. went under 50 twice in the event Thursday, earning the top-seed after a 49.64 in prelims and taking .55 more seconds off his time in the evening session. He finished second while setting the program record and is Union's first top-three finisher in any event at the championship meet since the 2023-24 season. Before Hill, Zack Wahl '14 was the only Union swimmer to touch the wall in under 50 seconds of the 100 fly. Wahl was named the Liberty League Swimmer of the Year at the Liberty League Championships in 2014.

Thanks to Hill's silver medal, another A-finals swim from first-year Tripp Kennedy, and four other finals swims, Union moved up a spot in the standings to fifth place with 255 points. Ithaca leads the way with 863 points.

Kennedy kicked prelims off for Union on Thursday with a lifetime-best 1:42.37 in the 200 freestyle and a spot in the A-final. He touched the wall even quicker during the evening session, placing sixth in 1:41.82 and solidifying his spot in the program record book with the seventh-best 200 free performance in school history.

Sophomore Brayden Green placed 13th in the 100 fly (52.61), representing Union's only B-finalist of the day.

Junior Gavin Baltes, first-year Emlen Lease, and sophomore Rob Shontz competed in C-finals for the Garnet Chargers. Baltes notched a pair of lifetime-bests in the 200 free, smashing his LB from earlier in the year by nearly four seconds and placing 21st (1:46.61). Lease notched a LB in prelims of the 100 fly (54.76) before finishing 21st as well, and Shontz doubled down on a LB in the 400 IM with a 4:52.66 in prelims and a 4:49.00 in the C-final, placing 20th.

Kennedy, Hill, Baltes, and senior Benjamin Sperling impressed in the 200 freestyle relay to cap off the night with a fourth-place finish (1:27.18).

With the championships half over, Day 3 will commence on Friday, Feb. 20 at 10 a.m. with the 200 butterfly.
